Joseph MCCOY

(1791 - 16 May 1866)

The Historical Society of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia holds a box of papers for Augustus Drum who was an attorney from Greensburg, Pennsylvania and served one term in Congress (March, 1853-March, 1855). There were two letters to Augustus Drum asking for his help since the surviving children of Daniel McCoy believed there was money owed to their deceased father from his Revolutionary War pension. The first letter was from James McCreay, Shelocta, Indiana County, Pennsylvania and was dated 30 June 1854. He stated in his letter that there were two surviving children of Daniel McCoy: his mother, Mary McCreay, and Joseph McCoy. The letter also stated that there was a family Bible but no further information is available regarding it. The second letter was from James Gordon, Indiana County, Pennsylvania and was dated 25 April 1854.  He states that Daniel McCoy's son, Joseph McCoy, believes there is money owed to his deceased father from his Revolutionary War pension.

Three of Joseph McCoy's children married spouses with the surname Bell. His daughter, Mary E. McCoy, married Thomas W. Bell. Thomas W. Bell filed Letters of Administration and was appointed administrator of his father's estate since his father, George Bell, did not leave a will. Joseph's son, James L. McCoy, married Sarah Jane Bell and Joseph's son, Charles Norris McCoy, married Martha Ellen Bell. George Bell may also be the father of Sarah Jane Bell and Martha Jane Bell.
