Individual Details

William MCCOY

(28 Nov 1820 - 16 Feb 1894)

William McCoy operated a hotel or inn in Indiana during the late 1850's and early 1860's. It was called the West Indiana House or McCoy Hotel. He frequently bought and sold property in Indiana County, Pennsylvania. David Ralston, the sheriff in Indiana County, was often a party to these transactions. David R. McCoy, William's son, may be named after him.

William McCoy owned the property that later became Oakland Cemetery. There is an article in the Indiana Register, Indiana, Pennsylvania dated 25 November 1863: "MR. WILLIAM McCOY, the owner of the piece of ground to which we then referred, has signified his willingness to dispose of it for cemetery purposes; and a paper asking subscriptions for burial lots has already been circulated, and some forty lots subscribed for. It is the intention of MR. McCOY, as soon as fifty lots are taken, to at once proceed laying out the grounds, (fifteen acres) in a tasteful and convenient manner, have a house erected for the occupancy of a warden, and to have the whole incorporated, so that it can only be used for the legitimate purposes for which it is set apart."
