Kaheiheimalie

(Abt 1778 - Jan 1842)

LIFE
A. Conflict: Stokes, New Bases for Hawaiian Chronology, p 44 estimates birth year as 1780.
B. "She was given the name Kaniu "the coconut" (Kamakau, Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii, p 385).
C. She paired with Kalaimamahu 5 or 6 years after the battle of Kaipalaoa (Kamakau, Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii, p 386) about 1794 (Stokes, New Bases for Hawaiian Chronology, p. 57). Kamehameha took her away from his brother. "Unlike his other wives, she took no other man to herself while Kamehameha lived.... There was no woman of his household whom Kamehameha loved so much as Ka-hei-hei-malie" (Kamakau, Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii, p 386).
D. Kamehameha I enlisted Hoapiliwahine and Kekauluohi to Kalaikuahulu to be instructed in the genealogies. "some of the things of the genealogy were forgotten, perhaps because of the duration of their instruction" (McKinzie, Hawaiian Genealogies, vol 2 p 17). She was second in esteem of Kamehameha's mates (Kamakau, Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii, p 184).
E. At the death of Kamehameha, after living with him for 20 years, she mourned for 1 year, and then paired with Kanuha (about 1820). Following the death of Keopuolani in September 1823, "she became the wife of Ulu-maheihei, they became converted, were married under Christian vows, and took the names of Hoa-pili-kane and Mary Hoa-pili-wahine [the Hawaiian form of Mr. and Mrs.] ... Hoa-pili had accepted the word of God because of Ke-opu-o-lani. Ka-heihei-malie turned to Christianity first, and Ka-'ahu-manu followed" (Kamakau, Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii, p 387).
F. Order of children with Kamehameha (McKinzie, Hawaiian Genealogies, vol 1 p 17).
G. She was governess of Maui with Hoapili (Dibble, History of the Sandwich Islands, p 56). "When Hoapili died, she was governess of Maui from 1840 to 1842. She donated 1,000 acres of land upland of Lahaina for the Lahainaluna school" (Oukah, Hawaiian Royal & Noble Genealogies, p 89).
H. Conflict: Died 17 Sept 1877 at residence of Charles R. Bishop in Kealia, Hawaii (Hawaiian Chiefs Biographical Abstract). Died 16 Jan 1842 (Oukah, Hawaiian Royal & Noble Genealogies, p 89).
