Kamamalu

LIFE
A. Kamehamalu means "under the protection of Kamehameha" (Kamakau, Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii, p 256). Kamamalu means "the shade of the lonely one" (Jarves, History of the Hawaiian and Sandwich Islands, p 214).
B. Conflict: Born about 1800 (Ahlo, Kamehameha's Children today, p 5).
Conflict: Corley, Queen Kamämalu’s Place in Hawaiian History, p 40 indicates bith year as 1801.
Conflict: Hawaiian Chiefs Biographical Abstract indicates she was 22 years old when she died in 1824.
Conflict: Jarves, History of the Hawaiian or Sandwich Islands, p 243 states she was 26 years old when making the trip to England, as does Ellis, A Narrative of a Tour through Hawaii in 1823, p 340.
C. As a toddler, she was betrothed to Liholiho and was joined with him when Kamamalu was 12 years old. She was his first mate (Corley, Queen Kamāmalu’s Place in Hawaiian History, p 40). She was head queen among Liholiho's mates (Alexander, A Brief History of the Hawaiian People, p 181).
D. She had no children (Descendants of Prince Keeaumoku I, Hms G65, Chart 8-A-2).
E. "She was distinguished for good nature, and was much beloved by all her subjects. The poor people, when unable to pay their rent, or under the displeasure of the king and chiefs, or embarrassed on any other account, frequenly repaired to her, and found a friend whose aid was never refused. She was also kind to those foreigners who might be distressed in the islands." She was a strong supporter of Christianity and encouraged her people to follow her example. She established a school in Honolulu. (Ellis, A Narrative of a Tour through Hawaii in 1823, p 340-341).
F. "She died in London, England in 1824 while visiting that kingdom with her royal consort" (Descendants of Prince Keeaumoku I, Hms G65, Chart 8-A-2). She died of measles (Kamakau, Ruling Chiefs of Hawaii, p 257).
