Nils Thoreson Rønningsgrind
(1 Jun 1838 - 12 Jan 1900)
In America he was known as Nils Thoreson.
Moved to America in 1869 under name Hermo - Singsaasboka Bind III page 479
From the church records at Waterloo Ridge Lutheran church in Decorah, Iowa, courtesy of Rev. W. Gordon Smedsrud, pastor at that church in 1985:
The names of Nils and Berith (Larsdatter) Thoreson appear in the records of Waterloo Ridge Lutheran Church with an entry regarding the birth of a daughter, Ingeborg, on 15th Dec. 1874. Records show she was baptized 10 Jan 1875, and died 19th Aug. 1875.
Another child was born to Nils and Berith (Lars dtr.) Thoreson, also named Ingeborg, on 16th March 18976, and baptized 9th April 1876.
There is no further record of this family. There is no indication that they ever joined Waterloo Ridge Lutheran church officially, but they apparently attended the congregation and participated in its ministry and services. There is no further reference in the records after 9 April 1876, which would seem to indicate that they left the Waterloo Ridge community sometime during the spring of that year.
(The Hendricks Pioneer was not being printed yet in January of 1900, when Nels died, and I do not know of another newspaper being published at that time. I do not have a copy of an obituary for him, and it's doubtful that there was one. BAJ)
I have a copy of the Trondheim Passenger List, #362,808 which lists Nels Thoreson Hermo and Berit Larsdatter coming on the ship Norway (lines 280 & 281), on 15 April 1869, with the destination being Lansing (Iowa?).
He declared his intention to become a citizen in Iowa and became a citizen in Lincoln County, MN on 15 June 1882.
The Final Receiver's Receipt for their homestead land was filed in Book "C" of Deeds, page 143 in Redwood Falls, MN for the NE1/4 28-112-46, and the Final Receivers Receipt for 80 acres timber culture located in the
