Tore Bersvendson Bjørkli
(1796 - 24 Dec 1846)
See Singsaas Boka III, page 478
The first years of the 1800's were very bad and difficult years in Norway, with unrest and misery after years of misharvest, which I interpret to mean that the land was not being taken care of properly. Thore Bersvendsen Bjerkli and Gollaug began as farmers under Gollaug's father, in Buseth, Singsaas. Thore was both strong and diligent, and he broke up many yards of his father-in-law's land, which he was farming. In 1837, he received a prize from the State for his excellent improvement of the land. He wanted to have a good farm of his own, so he bought a farm in Verdal, North Trondelag, about 16 Norwegian miles from the city of Trondheim. In 1840, they moved with their children to this farm. But he died on Christmas Eve in 1846.
With good help, Gollaug and her children came back to her home place, Ronning, in Buseth. Later, some of the children went to live with relatives in Budal, who were financially able to keep them. None of them stayed at Budal, however. The most of the children who stayed with Gollaug at her home Ronning, remained in Trondelag, not far from Ronning. (I used parts of the translation by Alfhild Bertheussen in 1989. BAJ)
