Ingeborg Thoreson

(19 Mar 1876 - 23 Jun 1945)

From the church records at Waterloo Ridge Lutheran church in Decorah, Iowa, courtesy of Rev. W. Gordon Smedsrud, pastor at that church in 1985:
The names of Nils and Berith (Lars dtr) Thoreson appear in the records of Waterloo Ridge Lutheran Church with an entry regarding the birth of a daughter, Ingeborg, on 15th Dec. 1874. Records show she was baptized 10 Jan 1875, and died 19th Aug. 1875.
Another child was born to Nils and Berith (Lars dtr.) Thoreson, also named Ingeborg, on 16th March 18976, and baptized 9th April 1876.
There is no further record of this family. There is no indication that they ever joined Waterloo Ridge Lutheran church officially, but they apparently attended the congregation and participated in its ministry and services. There is no further reference in the records after 9 April 1876, which would seem to indicate that they left the Waterloo Ridge community sometime during the spring of that year.

Obituary printed in Hendricks Pioneer:
Mrs. Ingeborg Mathison Buried Tuesday, June 26
Mrs. Ingeborg Thoreson Mathison was born March 19th, 1876, of the parents Nels Thoreson Ronning and Bertha Thoreson Ronning in Winneshiek County, Iowa. She died on Saturday, June 23, 1945, at the age of 69 years, three months and four days.
Her parents moved from the waterloo Ridge community in June of the same year she was born, and moved to Hendricks, Minnesota, where they homesteaded on a quarter section of land. She was baptized into the Lutheran faith and was confirmed by Pastor J. Nesheim. She made her home with her parents until on December 18, 1896, when she was married to Mathias T. Mathison. They started farming in 1897 and continued on their farm until after his death on November 30, 1943 (should have been 1942. BAJ) In September of 1943, she, with her daughter, Gena, and son, Anker, moved to the town of Hendricks, where she resided until her death. She leaves to mourn her passing eight children and eleven grandchildren. Six sons, Theodore and Anker, of Hendricks; Nels of Minneapolis; Martin of Lake Benton, Minnesota and Bennie and Adolph, in the Armed Forces; and two daughters, Gena of Hendricks, and Julia (Mrs. Clarence Eidem) of Elbow Lake, Minnesota. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Clara, on May 4th, 1924, and by her husband, on November 30, 1943 (s/b 1942 BAJ).
She also leaves eleven grandchildren to mourn her death, while three have preceded her in death. Four sisters and one brother preceded her in death, while two brothers and two sisters are living: Lars of Hendricks, and Hans of Marshall, Minnesota, and Bertha (Mrs. Lars Digre) and Anna (Mrs. Chris. Pederson).
Ingeborg was stricken by a severe heart attack on June 10. All the children were called to her bedside, except Bennie, who is somewhere in Europe. She rallied a little and lingered on until the morning of June 23rd, about ten, when the angel of the Lord carried her soul home.
She suffered considerably during this last illness.
May God bless her memory.
Faithful at her side as a constant and loving helper and nurse was her daughter, Gena. To her the other children are deeply grateful. May God reward her with His grace.
Gone from our home, oh, how we miss her,
Loving her deeply, her memory, we'll keep;
Nor till life ends shall we forget her,
Sacred to us is the place where she sleeps.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, June 26th, from the home at 1:30 and from the Lutheran Free church at 2:00 o'clock, of which she had been a faithful member. Rev. M. A. Ericksen officiated, assisted by Rev. Peder Lerseth. At the home, Mrs. M. A. Ericksen sang "Smerternes Vei". In the church, the choir sang "Asleep in Jesus", and "Den Store Hvide Flok". Mrs. Teddy Mathison and Mrs. P. C. Hinsverk sang "Shall I be Empty Handed" and Mrs. Mathison and Herman Ronning sang "Face to Face". The pallbearers were Bennie Thoreson, Bernhard Mathison, Teddy Mathison, Nels Pederson, Adolph Trooien and Sander Thoreson. She was laid to rest in the East cemetery.
