[What is the source of the following information?]:Zaccheus Gould, progenitor of the Topsfield, Massachusetts, branch of the family, was born in Bovington in 1589, in the parish of Hemel Hempsted, County of Hertford, England, and resided there, and at Great Messenden, Bucks, where he was assessed in 1629, until he emigrated to New England in 1638, bringing with him his wife and five children.
:: : He located first at Weymouth, Massachusetts, and a little later at Lynn, where he owned a mill. As early as 1644 he became one of the proprietors of Topsfield, where he acquired extensive property, being the largest landowner in that locality, and one of the first. In that year, by his petition, Topsfield was set off from Ipswich, becoming a separate town. The first building erected on his property there was a block-house which the inhabitants used as a protection against the frequent raids of the Indians. The iron works erected on the lands of Zaccheus Gould in Topsfield were among the first built in New England, and it was there the first iron castings were made. His son John was partner with him in these enterprises, and at the father's death inherited as only son an estate of three thousand acres. (Heroes of the Revolution, Whittemore, 176-182.)
:: : In 1660 Zaccheus Gould was fined for entertaining Quakers, but "on account of his loss by fire," the fine was remitted.See also ''Essex Antiquarian,'' I(1897):140, which states the fine was in 1659. It is written of him that he was a man of strong personality, decided convictions zealous in maintaining his rights, with a strong sense of justice, and liberal in his religious views, the latter a trait of character the Puritans could never tolerate. "He had an altercation with Governor Winthrop in regard to the naming of Topsfield, and a suit-at-law with Governor Endicott respecting the boundaries of their adjoining estates. He maintained friendly relations with the Quakers and Baptists, though both were proscribed, and more than once was severely fined for entertaining Quakers. Incensed by such persecutions, he thereafter refused to attend church services, and was subjected to additional fines for this misdemeanor." (Heroes of the Revolution, Whittemore, 176-182.)

Stones which were partially visible in 1872, in the Topsfield Cemetery, were supposed to mark the resting place of these early pioneers, though when some of his descendants in that year exhumed them with the hope of finding some inscriptions thereon, they were disappointed.

Zaccheus Gould died after 30 March 1668 at Topsfield, Essex, Massachusetts.
Zaccheus came to New England around 1638. His brother, Jeremy who settled in Rhode Island in 1638, and a number of other relatives preceded him. Zaccheus first settled in Weymouth, Massachusetts, where he bought land from Jeremy in 1639. From 1639 to 1644, Zaccheus lived in Lynn, Massachusetts, where he owned a mill on the Saugus River. He also leased 300 acres of Salem land from John Humphrey. The lease went into effect on 29 September 1640 and the farm was called "Plain Farm". By 1644, Zaccheus was living in Ipswich, in the section now occupied by Topsfield.
Zaccheus died between 30 March 30 and 13 November 1688. He was buried on land near the town meeting house. At the time of his death, he was one of the largest landholders in the area, having amassed 3000 acres in the area, which was then Rowley Village and later Boxford.

# RICHARD GOULD, of Stoke Mandeville, who was born as early as 1530, and married (perhaps as his second wife), Jane, widow of Weden. By her he had two sons, Richard and Henry.
## RICHARD GOULD, of Bovingdon, born about 1553, was the elder of these sons, and his descendants appear to have been prominent among the early settlers of New England. He was father of
### Jeremy, who married Priscilla Grover, came to Rhode Island, and after his wife's death returned to England, leaving behind him three sons, the eldest of whom, Daniel, married in 1651 Wait CoggesJiall, and became the ancestor of the large and highly respectable family of Goulds of Rhode Island.
### John, of the " Corner Hall," in Hemel Hempsted, and of King's Langley, — possibly also himself a colonist of New England. His youngest son, Zaccheus, died in New England unmarried, and letters of administration on his estate were granted to his elder sister, Elizabeth, in England. Other children of John also came over.
### Zaccheus, our ancestor, who was born in 1589 and died in 1670 at Topsfield. The stones may still be seen in the Topsfield cemetery which probably mark the places of burial for himself and his wife Phebe. In company with Messrs. Zaccheus Gould, his descendant of the sixth generation, and Samuel Todd, his descendant in the seventh, I exhumed these stones, hoping to find some inscription, but without success. About 1645 John Wildes moved to Topsfield probably due to the influence of his wealthy father-in-law Zaccheus Gould. His house stood on Perkins Row at the fork in the road coming from Mile Brook Bridge at a pear orchard. The house was demolished in 1835.

Zaccheus Gould died after 30 March 1668 at Topsfield, Essex, Massachusetts.
Zaccheus came to New England around 1638. His brother, Jeremy who settled in Rhode Island in 1638, and a number of other relatives preceded him. Zaccheus first settled in Weymouth, Massachusetts, where he bought land from Jeremy in 1639. From 1639 to 1644, Zaccheus lived in Lynn, Massachusetts, where he owned a mill on the Saugus River. He also leased 300 acres of Salem land from John Humphrey. The lease went into effect on 29 September 1640 and the farm was called "Plain Farm". By 1644, Zaccheus was living in Ipswich, in the section now occupied by Topsfield.
Zaccheus died between 30 March 30 and 13 November 1688. He was buried on land near the town meeting house. At the time of his death, he was one of the largest landholders in the area, having amassed 3000 acres in the area, which was then Rowley Village and later Boxford.

# RICHARD GOULD, of Stoke Mandeville, who was born as early as 1530, and married (perhaps as his second wife), Jane, widow of Weden. By her he had two sons, Richard and Henry.
## RICHARD GOULD, of Bovingdon, born about 1553, was the elder of these sons, and his descendants appear to have been prominent among the early settlers of New England. He was father of
### Jeremy, who married Priscilla Grover, came to Rhode Island, and after his wife's death returned to England, leaving behind him three sons, the eldest of whom, Daniel, married in 1651 Wait CoggesJiall, and became the ancestor of the large and highly respectable family of Goulds of Rhode Island.
### John, of the " Corner Hall," in Hemel Hempsted, and of King's Langley, — possibly also himself a colonist of New England. His youngest son, Zaccheus, died in New England unmarried, and letters of administration on his estate were granted to his elder sister, Elizabeth, in England. Other children of John also came over.

The stones may still be seen in the Topsfield cemetery which probably mark the places of burial for himself and his wife Phebe. In company with Messrs. About 1645 John Wildes moved to Topsfield probably due to the influence of his wealthy father-in-law Zaccheus Gould. His house stood on Perkins Row at the fork in the road coming from Mile Brook Bridge at a pear orchard. The house was demolished in 1835.

[What is the source of the following information?]:Zaccheus Gould, progenitor of the Topsfield, Massachusetts, branch of the family, was born in Bovington in 1589, in the parish of Hemel Hempsted, County of Hertford, England, and resided there, and at Great Messenden, Bucks, where he was assessed in 1629, until he emigrated to New England in 1638, bringing with him his wife and five children.
:: : He located first at Weymouth, Massachusetts, and a little later at Lynn, where he owned a mill. As early as 1644 he became one of the proprietors of Topsfield, where he acquired extensive property, being the largest landowner in that locality, and one of the first. In that year, by his petition, Topsfield was set off from Ipswich, becoming a separate town. The first building erected on his property there was a block-house which the inhabitants used as a protection against the frequent raids of the Indians. The iron works erected on the lands of Zaccheus Gould in Topsfield were among the first built in New England, and it was there the first iron castings were made. His son John was partner with him in these enterprises, and at the father's death inherited as only son an estate of three thousand acres. (Heroes of the Revolution, Whittemore, 176-182.)
:: : In 1660 Zaccheus Gould was fined for entertaining Quakers, but "on account of his loss by fire," the fine was remitted.See also ''Essex Antiquarian,'' I(1897):140, which states the fine was in 1659. It is written of him that he was a man of strong personality, decided convictions zealous in maintaining his rights, with a strong sense of justice, and liberal in his religious views, the latter a trait of character the Puritans could never tolerate. "He had an altercation with Governor Winthrop in regard to the naming of Topsfield, and a suit-at-law with Governor Endicott respecting the boundaries of their adjoining estates. He maintained friendly relations with the Quakers and Baptists, though both were proscribed, and more than once was severely fined for entertaining Quakers. Incensed by such persecutions, he thereafter refused to attend church services, and was subjected to additional fines for this misdemeanor." (Heroes of the Revolution, Whittemore, 176-182.)
:: : Zaccheus Gould married in England, Phebe Deacon, who died in Topsfield, 20 September 1663. (Essex County Historical and Genealogical Register, vol. 1, no. 4.) Stones which were partially visible in 1872, in the Topsfield Cemetery, were supposed to mark the resting place of these early pioneers, though when some of his descendants in that year exhumed them with the hope of finding some inscriptions thereon, they were disappointed.
