::John Putnam married PRISCILLA GOULD Abt. January 1610/11 in Wingrave, Buckinghamshire, England, daughter of RICHARD GOULD and ELIZABETHJohn was perhaps married in 1611 or 1612. The marriage records for this period are missing from the Wingrave register, and the register for Hemel Hempstead is lost.
On November 25, 1658, Zaccheus Gould of Topsfield deputed "John Putnam of Salem, the younger, his cousin" to be his attorney. (Essex Court Records, IV, 100). In an account book of John Gould, grandson of Zaccheus, born 1662, died 1724, is found an entry by him as follows, "Grandfather Gould lived in Buckinghamshire, and Grandfather Deacon in Hertfordshire, in Hempstead town in Corner Hall." In this same book are references to John Putnam, a contemporary, alluded to as "cousin." Jeremy Gould, a brother of Zaccheus, had a wife (Priscilla Grover) and was living in Aston Abbotts in 1631, but was in Rhode Island in 1638. Another brother of Zaccheus was John Gould, who lived in Bovington, and had a daughter Priscilla (who married a Grover and had in turn a daughter named after her) and also a neice Priscilla Ware. Neither of those were of suitable age to have married with John Putnam. (see Water's Gleanings, pg 1019) Both John Putnam and Zaccheus Gould named daughters "Phoebe." Cousin was a term in use in the early part of the 17th century to indicate nephew, and as there appears no opportunity for a Putnam-Gould marriage either way, the only alternative is to adopt the suggestion that John Putnam and Zacchues Gould had married sisters. ::John Putnam, who came from Aston, Abbots co. Bucks., England, to Salem, Mass., in the fourth decade of the seventeenth century, ??? have sought in vain for the maiden name of his wife Priscilla, the mother of his children.
::It has been suggested that she was a daughter of Thomas Deacon of Hemel Hempstead, a reasonable assumption since Zaccheus Gould, who is known to have married Phebe Deacon, the eldest daughter of Thomas Deacon of Hemel Hempstead, refers to the emigrant's son, John Putnam the younger, as "my Cousin" - a term which at this period usually implied a nephew - when he made him his attorney on 30 Sept. 1658. The difficulty has been to determine in what way the term "Cousin" applied in this case.

(see pg 46, Genealogical Bulletin for 1903)

Bucks, though family tradition has the name of a place in Co. Warwick, where it is unknown, freeman 1647, says Farmer by mistake, though true it is he was that year received into the church as had been his wife in 1641, died 30 December 1662.
:It has been suggested that she was a daughter of Thomas Deacon of Hemel Hempstead, a reasonable assumption since Zaccheus Gould, who is known to have married Phebe Deacon, the eldest daughter of Thomas Deacon of Hemel Hempstead, refers to the emigrant's son, John Putnam the younger, as "my Cousin" - a term which at this period usually implied a nephew - when he made him his attorney on 30 Sept. 1658. The difficulty has been to determine in what way the term "Cousin" applied in this case.
:Note: Torrey indicated marriage before 1605; this appears in error. He has the marriage with Zaccheus Gould for before 1620, Torrey's Supplement also has the marriage bef 1605 and cites REG 119:174. 2 3 1 (Banfill)
: The Putnam name comes from the parish Puttenham in Buckinghamshire. Slater, Charles A. and Katrina Putnam Slater. ''Ancestors of Charles A. Slater, Jr. and Katrina Putnam Slater'' (Overland, KS: Charles A. Slater, Jr. and Katrina Putnam Slater, 1992), 215.
:On November 25, 1658, Zaccheus Gould of Topsfield deputed "John Putnam of Salem, the younger, his cousin" to be his attorney. (see pg 46, Genealogical Bulletin for 1903)

:Daughter of Richard and Mary Gould. Wife of John Putnam. Mother of Thomas Putnam, Elizbaeth Putnam, John Putnam, Nathaniel Putnam, Sara Putnam, Phoebe Putnam and John Putnam.
: : According to the Putnam ancestry in England was published in New England Families, Third Series, Vol II, William Richard Cutter, ed. (Lewis: New York, 1915, pp. 1075-76). John Putnam (1579-1662), 12th Putnam (Puttenham) in this line, son of Nicholas and Margaret Putnam, was the immigrant Putnam ancestor.]]
: : John lived on his inherited estates at Ashton Abbots until he immigrated to Massachusetts by 1640/41, when he received a grant of land and where his wife Priscilla Deacon (?-?) [Priscilla Gould?]was enrolled in the church in Salem, MA. John was enrolled on April 4, 1647. John and Priscilla were the parents of Elizabeth, Thomas II (1614-1686), John, Nathaniel, Phoebe, and John.
: : Thomas Putnam II was the father of Joseph (1669-1724) and grandfather of the famous Israel Putnam (1717/18-1790) (See ALL OF THE ABOVE I, p. 297.) Three generations of Putnams (John, Thomas, Joseph) were among the few prominent, wealthy families in tiny Salem Villege, MA in the 17th century. [. . .]
