:In 1344, negotiations began for Joan to marry the son of Alphonso, King of Castile. She was to marry Pedro, who would later become known as Pedro the Cruel. The process took years and terms were not agreed upon until August of 1347. In March of 1348, Joan left England with a large retinue. At her father's orders they were to travel to Bordeaux and wait for word that all aspects of the marriage contract had been met before proceeding on to Bayonne for the marriage. They arrived in Bordeaux on March 31 and stayed until July.
:That spring, the Black Death reached Bordeaux and rapidly spread in the city. Fearing for her safety, the Princess' party fled to Lormont, a small town outside of Bordeaux. They were safe there for only short time. Princess Joan became the first victim of the Black Death in Lormont and died there on 2 September 1348. Her body was taken to the very church in which she was to have been married, and she was interred in Bayonne Cathedral.
