==Biography of William Sutherland==}William was born circa 1311. He was the eldest son of [[Moravia-8|Kenneth Sutherland]] 4th Earl of Sutherland by his wife [[Mar-6| Mary (sometimes called Marjorie) Mar]].
William was a perfect example of a member of a family whose loyalties had moved during the Wars of Independence when Scotland first fell under and then broke loose from the control of the English crown. His grandfather had supported Edward I of England but his uncle and father had moved over to support Robert the Bruce. His mother was the sister of Robert the Bruce's first wife, making his father the king's brother-in-law.
William cemented his family's tie to the House of Bruce by making what was arguably the marriage of the day when he married Princess Margaret Bruce, the king's eldest daughter from his second marriage. They married circa 1342-43 at Dunfermline, probably at Dunfermline Abbey in Fife.
William was a close ally of his brother-in-law David II, King of Scots. He supported him in his border wars with England and successfully recaptured Roxburgh Castle from English forces.
The marriage to Princess Margaret Bruce was to lead to only one son surviving, John who was born on 30th March 1346. Sadly Margaret died in or as a result of childbirth.
William remained close to his brother-in-law and David named his nephew John Sutherland as his chosen heir in preference to his half-nephew Robert Stewart, son of his elder half-sister Marjorie who was William's first cousin. This caused tension within the royal family, not helped by David being taken prisoner by the English forces. David gifted extensive lands across Scotland to William who in turn gifted many of them to other nobles in order to secure their support for the succession of his son John when David eventually died.
William remarried before 9th November 1347 to Joanna Menteith, daughter of Sir John Menteith of Ruskie, best known for capturing and handing over William Wallace to the forces of Edward I of England.

There were ar least 3 children from William's second marriage:*Robert Sutherland 6th Earl of Sutherland b: ABT 1347 in Dunrobin Castle, Golspie, Sutherland, Scotland*Kenneth Sutherland b: ABT 1350 in Dunrobin Castle, Golspie, Sutherland, Scotland* John Beg Sutherland b: ABT 1353 in Dunrobin Castle, Golspie, Sutherland, Scotland

Both William and his eldest son John spent time in England as hostages for the good behaviour of the Scots, a common practice across Europe at the time. Sadly during one of these periods in 1361, John caught the plague and died in Lincoln while acting as a hostage for his uncle's good behaviour.
William died on or before 19 Jun 1371 at Dunrobin Castle, Golspie, Sutherland, Scotland.
