Kenneth Moravia

(Aft 1289 - 19 Jul 1333)

== Biography of Kenneth de Moravia, 4th Earl Sutherland==}Kenneth Sutherland, 4th Earl of Sutherland was the younger son of William de Moravia, 2nd Earl Sutherland (born before 1248, died between Apr 1306 - Sep 1307). He inherited the Earldom on the death of his elder brother William de Moravia, 3rd Earl of Sutherland (born c. 1280, died 1330) without issue.
He was born some time after 1289, probably in 1291 most likely at Dunrobin Castle, Golspie, Sutherland, Scotland.
He married Lady Marjorie (Mary) of Mar, daughter of Donald, 6th Earl of Mar and Helen, the natural daughter of Llywelyn the Great, Prince of Wales, some time after 1306 and before 1311. Kenneth was her second husband. Through this marriage, he became brother-in-law to Robert the Bruce, King of Scots, whose first wife was Lady Isabella Mar, sister of Marjorie (Mary).
Like many other nobles and Scottish knights, Kenneth died on 19 July 1333, killed fighting in the Battle of Halidon Hill, near Berwick-on-Tweed. Berwick-on-Tweed was a natural flashpoint between the rival crowns of Scotland and England. At that time it was in Scotland but since the reign of Henry VIII has been in Northumberland in England.

Kenneth and Marjorie had the following children:
William Sutherland 5th Earl of Sutherland b: ABT 1311 in Dunrobin Castle, Golspie, Sutherland, Scotland
Nicholas Sutherland 1st Laird of Duffus b: ABT 1314 in Dunrobin Castle, Golspie, Sutherland
Eustachia Sutherland b: ABT 1309 in Dunrobin Castle, Golspie, Sutherland, Scotland

==Research Note==With most members of the extended Sutherland family pre-1600, the place and date of birth is rarely recorded and took place before the earliest date of surviving Church records. The age, origins and other details of most are obtained through the content of Wills, Testaments and Land Charters.
For women, they first appear in the Marriage Contracts and Settlements entered into on their behalf by their fathers or brothers. In some cases there may be little or no record of a woman in her own family but her origins have been recorded in the records of the family into which she married, especially if she subsequently became mother of an heir.
For men, generally only the eldest son is fully recorded, his younger brothers only being named if granted land in their own right or through inheritance by marrying an heiress. The other main source of information on men comes from military service, especially where recorded as having been killed in a particular battle.
