== Biography ==}John was born after 1353. He is the son of [[Sutherland-1243|William Sutherland]] and [[Menteith-3|Joan Menteith]]. For some reason John Beg has been something of a shadowy figure within the Sutherland family and written records about him are somewhat confusing.
Some sources refer to John Beg as being a son of Robert, 6th Earl of Sutherland and yet others a son of Nicholas, Earl of Sutherland. Unless an Earl of Sutherland has been completely written out of the history books (highly unlikely but not impossible) then the only Nicholas he could have been a son of is his uncle, Nicholas of Torboll.
John Beg is said to have been the founder of the Sutherland of Langwell line (first creation). There is considerable merit in this claim because generations of his descendants occupied Langwell and Berriedale on the Caithness side of the Ord of Caithness in the Parish of Latheron. The modern day representatives of this First Langwell Line are the descendants of the Sutherland of Blackness family from Clyth on the northern and north-western boundaries of Latheron where it meets Halkirk and Wick Parishes.
