( - )

Clay or A.C., were his preferred names, was born in Woodland, Pennsylvania where he attended local schools until the seventh grade, when his father asked for him to leave for work in the local coal mines. He enlisted in the Army to serve in WWI, attained the rank of sergeant. He was a member of Co. B 301 BN. 305 Brig. Heavy Tank Company. His outfit saw action in France. After the war Clay rode the rails like a hobo, in his quest for work. This took him to many places, such as helping to build an army camp in Virginia to working in the automobile factories of Detroit. Later, after his marriage to Anna he went back to work in the mines. At night after work, he built the family home by the light of his mining lamp, often held by Anna. He later worked as a pattern maker for Harbision-Walker refractories. His hobby was woodworking.
