In 1907 James took a job in Post City, Texas working as a bookkeeper for a railroad and its Commissary. After the railroad was completed he helped take a load of mules to Corinth, Mississippi. From there he went to Savannah, Tennessee and met his mothers relatives. This was the only time he saw his Robinson and Hargour cousins.

He settled on a Homestead just east of Sweetwater. His mother Martha Ann lived with him until her death. About 1919 they moved to an 800 acre farm he bought near Berlin. The children attended Berlin schools with all at least finishing the eighth grade.

In 1948 James, his wife and son Floyd took their Studebaker with a tarp on the back and began looking for a new start. They finally settled in eastern Oklahoma where free range land was available and they could run cattle in the mountains part of the year. James and his four sons bought land near Wilburton, Oklahoma.
