Sometime between 1881 and 1885 William and Martha moved to Beaver Creek south of Vernon in Wilbarger County, Texas. The purchased 640 acres and built a cotton gin. This area was fairly new and sparcely populated with few homes and no railroad.

He died of pneumonia due to his weak lungs damaged in the Civil War. He died after repairing a leaking roof in a heavy winter rainstorm and was buried in the Four Coners Cemetery near Beaver Creek in the "gin pasture" on what is now the Waggoner Ranch.

In April, 1899 Martha Wingo sold her 640 acres in Wilbarger County, Texas to W. T. Waggoner and moved to Crowell, Foard County, Texas. Around 1904 Martha , James Baxter and the two McCord families moved to an area soon to be called "Wingo" just south of Sweetwater in Rogers Mills County, Oklahoma. She lived with James Baxter until her death in 1922.
