William H. WINGO
(12 Feb 1838 - 14 Mar 1891)
Co. I, 63 TN Inf., CSA
Although no records have been found he was probably in the same unit in the Civil War as his brother Simpson. Would have served in Company G, 1'st (Fields) Regiment, Tennessee Infantry. Was in Battle of Shilo/Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee on April 6-7,1962. Was wounded during the war i the upper chest. The 1'st Regiment participated in more than fourty five engagements, and when it surrounded at Bennetts House, Durham Station, North Carolina on April 26, 1865 only 125 members remained. They marched back to Nashville, Tennessee as a unit reaching ther destination on May 21, 1865.
Returned to Hardin County after the war and is on the 1866 tax list. He then moved to Johnson County, Texas where he appears on the 1870 Federal Census. He returned to Tennessee to marry and he, his wife and her parents moved to Texas. His inlaws became homesick and returned to Tennessee.

Sometime between 1881 and 1885 William and Martha moved to Beaver Creek south of Vernon in Wilbarger County, Texas. The purchased 640 acres and built a cotton gin. This area was fairly new and sparcely populated with few homes and no railroad.
He died of pneumonia due to his weak lungs damaged in the Civil War. He died after repairing a leaking roof in a heavy winter rainstorm and was buried in the Four Coners Cemetery near Beaver Creek in the "gin pasture" on what is now the Waggoner Ranch.
In April, 1899 Martha Wingo sold her 640 acres in Wilbarger County, Texas to W. T. Waggoner and moved to Crowell, Foard County, Texas. Around 1904 Martha , James Baxter and the two McCord families moved to an area soon to be called "Wingo" just south of Sweetwater in Rogers Mills County, Oklahoma. She lived with James Baxter until her death in 1922.
