On 4/26/1941 he was the second bay drafted from Roger Mills County. He was in Company C, 35'th Engineers Battalion and drove earth moving equipment constructing highways, airports and drill fields. He later drove for a Colonel. One day in order to get an ammunition truck off a boat the Colonel sent Jim to drive the truck. He continued to drive ammunition trucks which saved his life as the Colonel and his replacement driver hit a mine soon after that and both were killed.

He was discharged 9/23/1945 and went back to Berlin to get the horses his father was raising for him. After a visit he loaded the horses on a rail car and went to Kansas. There he sold all of his horses but "Colorado" a bucking horse no one but Jim could ride. Jim liked to ride in Rodeo's and he let others try to ride Colorado. After they failed he would bet that he could ride him with just a loose rope. He won his bets.

While home in 1946 he met a neighbor, Pauline Potter. She was 17 then and slipped away to marry Jim and met him where he had found work in Amarillo, Texas. Since she was not 21 they drove to Las Vegas, New Mexico where she lied about her age and they were married.

He and his new bride went to the Kuttler Ranch just east of Tribune, Kansas where Virgil Kuttler hired Jim. He then bought land in Buffalo Valley near his father and brothers in eastern Oklahoma. Following back surgery he sold and moved to Salem, California to work in a store owned by a brother-in-law and sister. In December 1951 he bought 80 acres, a horse, 2 head of cattle and 10 tons of hay for $3,200 just south of Wilburton, Oklahoma near his family. For the next 20 years he bought and shipped cattle for Virgil Kuttler and others. He is buried in the Luti Cemetery east of Berlin, Oklahoma
