William "Billy" WINGO

(1760 - 5 Jun 1834)




William Wingo was a son of Thomas Wingo, Jr. and Sarah Unknown. His grandparents were Thomas Wingo, Sr. and Jane Unknown. His great grandfather was the John Wingo that died in Amelia County, Virginia in 1755.

He served in the Revolutionary War against Great Britain. On April 20, 1779 he enlisted in Amelia County, Virginia for a term of 18 months under Captain Booker. He served as a private in the 1'st Virginia regiment. In April, 1779 they marched to Fredericksburg, Virginia, then through Maryland, Delaware and Pennsylvania and to Petersburg, Virginia. In June, 1779, under the command of General Scott the marched through South Carolina to Augusta, Georgia and participated in the siege of Savannah, Georgia in October, 1779. The then returned to winter quarters in Augusta, Georgia. In February, 1780 ,under General Lincoln the marched to Charleston, South Carolina and were attacked by the British in April, 1780 and on May 12, 1780 they surrendered. William remained a prisoner until June 28,1781 when he was exchanged at Jamestown, Virginia.

He fought with the famous Polish General Kazimier Pulaski. He had no bounty warrant file or number but his pension file number (NNRG) was S7896 and pension number was S7896.

Settled on Jorden's Creek of the North Tyger River shortly after the Revolutionary War.

"William (Billy) Wingo was a first cousin of John Wingo, the ancestor of the families just mentioned. He also came to the same neighborhood in Spartanburg County after the Revolution. He was married twice and had three children by the first marriage. One of these was the first wife of Reuben Gramling. The other two were Thomas and John Wingo -- the latter sometimes called Johnnie Crust or Blinkey Johnny to distinguish him from others of the same name. Thomas removed to Missouri some time in the forties, and was married four times. His brother, John (Crust) Wingo ..."
