Old Settler Passes Away
Jotham Martin passed quietly
away to his home, Saturday morn-
ing after a lingering illness.
Jotham Martin was born in Greene
county, Pennsylvania, Oct. 8, 1818 and died
in Blue Hill April 20, 1907 aged 88
years, 6 months and 12 days. Dur-
ing his infancy his parents moved to
West Virginia where he grew to
manhood, and was married to Miss
Rebecca Clegg at Moundsville, Virginia,
March 12, 1842. To this union
thirteen children were born, five of
whom have passed to the great
beyone and the remaining eight
were here to attend the last sad
rites of their departed father. They
are: Presley, of Minonk, Illinois; John
M., of Vancouver, Wash.; Euclid of
Omaha; Joshua, George W., and J.
K., of Blue Hill; Mrs. Mary San-
son, of Wilcox; and Mrs. Esther
Trowbridge of Blue Hill. His wife
is also left to mourn his departure.
From West Virginia he moved to
Minonk, Illinois in 1861 where he re-
mained until 1884, when he came
west with his family and located at
Blue Hill where he has since resided.
Funeral services were conducted
at the residence Monday forenoon
at 10:30 o'clock in charge of Rev.
Hummell of Red Cloud, assisted by
Rev. Martin of Blue Hill. Many
friends attended to pay their last
respects.
Mr. Martin has always been an
upright and influential citizen, in
Illinois serving in a number of places
of trust and in Nebraska several
terms as supervisor from his town.
The family has the sympathy of

Jotham appears in the Illinois census enumerated on 3 July 1865 in Groveland Township, LaSalle Co., Illinois.

In 1861, Jotham and Rebecca left their farm in Marshall Co., West Virginia under the care of R. M. Clegg, and came west and located on John Babb's farm, three miles below Lacon, Illinois. They remained there a year or two and then bought Robert Smiley's farm near Dana, Illinois.
