On the boat "Ruapehu", from Plymouth. His fare was 36 pounds, 15shillings.
It was on this passage that he met his wife, Gertrude CHALLIS.
John had previously come to New Zealand in 1882, but had returned to
England in 1884 to see his mother who was ill.

The house "Waiwhero" was built by John's brother, Stephen CharlesGORDON.
Marriage
At St. Mary's Pre-Cathedral, Auckland.John had originally emigrateds to New Zealand in 1882 but had returned
to England in 1884 to see his mother who was ill. It was on the boat
on his return to New Zealand in 1885 that he met Gertrude, who was
emigrating to New Zealand with her widowed mother and six siblings.
Gertrude was the sister of Mildred GORDON (nee CHALLIS) who maried
Stephen Charles GORDON.
