Gladys Newton GORDON

A publication, entitled "A Family of Gordons (page 30 - compiled by
Rosaleen DOUGLAS, 32 Hoterini Street, Ohope (2001)) details some of
her ancestory.
Her sister, Marjorie Katherine NEWTON (nee GORDON) died 9 days after
having her 4th child. The child, Norah Marjory (Zae) NEWTON, was taken
by Gladys and raised as her own. (This was a typically generous
gesture)
As a child of four years, she was taken by her Aunt Kate (CHALLIS?) to
visit her Uncle Stephen Bilton GORDON & Aunt Ellen GORDON (was this in
fact her grandparents?), at Stowford Rectory, Devon, England.

Was born at "Waiwhero".Occupation
Was companion governess to a family of five HUTCHINSON children inPoverty Bay, who treated her as one of their own.
Marriage
They met through Douglas DYMOCK visiting the home of the HUTCHINSON'swhere Gladys GORDON worked as a companion governess.
Community Organ
She was alwayd involved in the welfare of the community. During thewar years she was busy helping raise money for the Patriotic Fund with
farm produce, james, pickles, etc. Fruit cakes for the soldiers were
made from carefully saved rations, sewed into calico, named, and with
a cheerful note tucked in, were put on the dining room table ready for
dispatch.
Religion
Her faith was strong and carried her through many difficult times,especially during World War II

She possessed a very enquiring mind and a thirst for knowledge, whichled to being a consuming book lover all her life (her daughter,
Barbara and adopted daughter Zae were always trying to "trip up" her
amazing general knowledge later in life).
