Sydney GORDON

In the late 1950's and 1960's she owned a Morris Minor car which was
known as "Taurus". She wasn't the safest of drivers, in fact her
driving was a bit alarming, but she never had an accident.
She was known by her family of nephews and nieces as a person who
spent her whole life helping people, never sparing herself in the
task.

Birth
Born at "Waiwhero"' Waiotahi Valley.Occupation
Trained at Auckland Hospital, Auckland. Apart from nursing duties,nurses also had to scrub floors and do general cleaning duties. This
made her very tired and her health suffered so much that she had to
give up nursing.
Occupation
At Woodford House School. She taught the girls the rudiments ofgardening, as well as doing some Matron duties.
During this time, it is believed that she owned a Morris 10 car which
was known as "Taurus".
Death
Died in the Palmerston North hospital.Occupation
Grew cut flowers for the markets as well as suppling her cousin,Marianne ANSELL's florist shop in Queens (or Strand) Arcade, Auckland
City.
She also had various positions as companion help to a number of women.
She spent at least one season in the Nelson area, picking hops and
fruit. In this time she had some "hair-raising" experiences.

"Stowford" was a new cottage built on "Hautapu" farm, home of Sydney'ssister, Gladys (Lal) DYMOCK.
She lived ther with her mother and nursed her until her death in 1940.

Stayed for a time with her sister Christine (Norah) LANGDON at"Ardilea" in Colyton as well as having her own place (a rented farm
cottage) about two miles from "Ardilea". During this period she was
not well, and for a time, was nursed by her sister Christine until
Sydney had to go into hospital.
Illness
Most work saw her get very tired, sometimes leading to an inability towork.
Interests
Wherever she resided, she maintained a garden. She seemed to have"green fingers" as even the most difficult plants thrived in her
hands.
Disability
Broke her nose which set badly. Was very self conscious of it, so whenpossible, she wore big hats with big brims well pulled down to hide
it.
