Joseph Stewart MCSHERRY

(1 Oct 1913 - )

In a letter from Joseph McSherry in 1998, he states the following ... "In 1934 I came to Fort Collins, Colorado, on vacation and I was offered a job at the Poudre Chevrolet Service Station. My uncle, OTTO GLOE, was the Auto shop service manager. He worked 27 years for the Poudre Chevrolet station and his father lived across the street north of Wallace and Anna Breniman in Brooklyn, Iowa. (The John Wayne House in Brooklyn is being referred to at the corner of Jackson and Des Moines Streets) My great grandfather, Ruebin Breniman, came to Fort Collins, Colorado before 1900 and owned interest in the Breniman Bros. bank on North College Ave. They came to Fort Collins because of their son Bill, who had T.B. where it finally caught up with him. Two other sons lived here, Frank a farmer east of Fort Collins, Colorado about 2 miles and Albert owned a service station and cottage camp on South College Ave. The other members of the family remained in Iowa. In early August of 1935 we came to Iowa to help on the farm and during the winter of 1935 we would get out the horses and bobsled and go over to play cards with your mother and father. (He's referring to Wallace and Anna Breniman who were married in April of 1935 and lived just a mile or so south of them on the Breniman farm) The snow was deep and we had one blizzard after another in Jan. and Feb. of the following year. In March it tried to settle and the weather became nice by April."
"After the harvest season was over in December (of 1936) we made plans to come to Colorado for the Christmas season. After spending a few weeks, I found some work and just stayed in Colorado. In 1938 I went to work as Parts Dept. manager with the International Harvester dealer. In 1942 I went to Cheyenne, Wyoming to work for United Airlines and was promoted to Crew Chief at U.A.L. Modification Center.
In 1944 I went into WW II at Lincoln, Nebraska and from there I was sent to Daniel Fields, Augusta, GA. and then to Macon, GA. When I returned to Fort Collins I purchased an International tractor and started custom farm work with the tractor. In 1951 I went to work in the parts department for M-M dealer in Loveland, CO. In 1956 I went back to Cheyenne to work for Land Air Co, for aircraft overhaul and modification. When it closed in 1957 we moved to Aurora, CO., where I went to work for Continental Air Lines in the accessory shop, progressed to aircraft overhaul and then to head mechanic with as many as ten mechanics to direct.
By the time I retired from the airlines, I was working at the terminal as Lean Mechanic, that is getting airplanes out of town on time. I had to retire in 1978 as I was 65 and I couldn't work for the airlines any longer, but I did go to work at Wright-McGill (fish hook) Co. in the shipping department for 5 years so when I was 70 they thought I should quit and "go fishing" and use up some of the fish hooks.
So, since 1983 I have worked around the yard. I like my afternoon naps. ha ha In October of 1991 I had my right hip replaced with a metal joint. It does slow you down."
