Individual Details

Matilda GAUMER

(1 May 1846 - 22 Aug 1889)

Matilda came to Iowa with her father when she was 10 years old. I assume her mother had died. She attended Grinnell College and taught school in Poweshiek Co, a successful teacher.
Something I find a bit confusing...An application for guardian was filed in Poweshiek District Court, dated 08 June 1893 for the minor heirs of Catherine Gaumer. This property is in Marshall County. The children are the children of Frederick and Matilda Breniman. One of the petitioners was Frederick but also Levi Gaumer, brother to Matilda. They had a sister, Catherine, so am wondering if she may have died and left her nieces and nephews property in Marshall County. Another conclusion is that Matilda also went by the name of Catherine. I just don't know.
On 28 Dec,1885, she was confirmed by the Rev. D.C. Smith and united with the Moravian Church at Harmony, Iowa. At this time five of their children were baptized. She was buried from the Moravian Church at Harmony, Ia at 2:30 P.M. on Sunday, the Rev. C.T. Oehler officiating.
