Jacob Watts

The will of Jacob Watts was written 26 January 1821 Orange County, Virginia; probated 27 August 1821." (Will Book #5 page 394, Orange County, Virginia.

"In 1806 he is shown as a Methodist Minister in Whitehall, Albemarle County, Virginia. He was also a farmer." (Mount Moriah United Methodist Church; It's Origin and Growth 1788-1988)

Information on Jacob Watts came from family records of Robert Harrison Watts and Charles Brunk Heiniemann, compliation of Watts Families of Tidewater Counties of Virginia.

"Jacob Watts was the son of Thomas Watts (will of Thomas Watts in Culpeper County, Virginia, Will Book A, 1749 - 1770). Marriage records of Orange County, Virginia as given in Magazine of History by Genealogical Publishing Company pp. 492 - 511 show Jacob as a minister. Jacob married Elizabeth Durrett (Rev. Edgar Wood, Albemarle County in Virginia, pp. 183 and 340). Will of Jacob found in Orange County, Virginia 1821 pp. 394 - 395. All children listed. Vol X Albemarle County Historical Magazine, p. 38 has death notice of Jacob. Vol. IX of the same magazine gives marriage bonds in Albemarle County 1786 - 1795 (Jacob Watts as minister, p. 49). Proof of service for Jacob found in Albemarle County, Order Book, 1783 - 1785. Jacob Watts certificates were received for provisions supplied. Also (Dunmore's War) Romney - Jacob Watts on payroll of Captain James Parsons (1775). Children also listed in Cyclopaedea of Virginia Biography, Lyon Gardner Tyler, Lewis Historical Publishing Co., New York 1915, Vol iv, 31 - 34. The latter reference has some information which conflicts with the other mentioned references. The material concerning William, eldest son of Jacob and Elizabeth, has dates which do not appear to be correct. Jacob and Elizabeth had 1100 acres of land near Piney Mt. on Albemarle and Orange County line. Majority of dates from Virginia Genealogist Vol. 16 1972), p. 96, Durrett Family of Aalbemarle Co. Palmer indicate that Jacob Watts was born in Orange County, Virginia.)

Jacob Watts who was born 9 July 1730 and died 14 April 1821. He left a will dated 26 Jan 1821. He was an early Methodist minister and owned over 1100 acres of land near Piney Mountain on the Albemarle-Orange county line. The children named in his will were: a) Mildred Watts; b) Williiam Watts; 3) John Watts; 4) Elijah Durrett Watts.

4. The Rev. Jacob studied for the minitry in Glasow, Scotland, and was ordained a minister in the Presbyterian Church but became a methodist minister in later years, serving widley as a circuit rider through the Blue Ridge and Appalachian Mountains. During the Revolutionary War Jacob provded food and provisions for the American military and additionally he guarded Tories at Albemarle Barracks near Charottesville. He owned over 1100 acres on the North Fork of Rivanna river near Piney Mountin in Orange and Albemarle Counties; in his last years he lived on his plantation "Homesstead" in Orange Co. Jacob and wife Elizabeth on 29 mar 1801 made a trusst deed to their son Elijah D. for the provision of Elizabeth and their children, ut the trut property was released by son Elijah D. on 4 Apr 1803 (Albearle Co. Deeds, 13:459, 14,229). In his will dated 26 Jan 1821 and probated on 27 Aug 1821 in Orange Co. Jacob provided for nine named childen and the five children of Frances Smith by her first husband.
