"Will of James Greer was filed in Franklin County, Virginia, but he moved to Pettus County, Missiouri. He was a Quaker." (Information from William Greer Peck, as per GREERS THAT GOT TO GEORGIA (1987) by Julian Greer.)

Some researchers give James birthplace and deathplace as Bedford County, Virginia.

"James Greer is said to have lived on the Staunton River near the Ferguson family into which his daughter Rhoda married." (from the papers of Martha V. Harris, Phoenix, Arizona, during the 1950's, as taken from a LDS microfilm.)

James Greer bought from Thomas Jefferson, 290 acres in Bedford County, Virginia on Stauton River. Survey 6 Apr 1772. Grants 20 Jul 1780 (Book E, page 90), 4 September 1781. He served in Rev. War.
