Asa Dillon
(Bet 1778 and 1782 - November, 1860)
Information about the family and parents of of Asa Dillon from DILLON ANCESTORS by Dr. Charles Raymond Dillon, page 199, as sent to Ralph Terry for inclusion in this genealogy by Jerry Offholter P. O. Box 370108, Montara, California 94037-0108; email: goffy@pacbell.net> in August 1996. He shows Asa Dillon was born about 1762. (NOTE FROM RALPH TERRY: I don't see that Asa could have been born about 1762. Probably 1778 to 1782 would be closer to the true birthdate.)
"Asa Dillon was the son of Jesse Dillon and Mary Elizabeth Blankenship. His father was born in Cumberland or Goochland County, Virginia (Note: Cumberland County was formed from Goochalnd County in 1749.) Jesse Dillon was born in 1749, and died 12 Jun 1833 near Haleford, Virginia. He was married in 1776, to Mary Elizabeth Blankship, born in 1759, Chesterfield, Virginia. She died 8 May 1842 in Haleford, Virginia. Both are buried near the home of Thomas Holland and Dee Dillon near Cross Roads. Jesse owned 1100 acres of land in the vicinity of Haleford and Cross Roads. At the time of his death, he owned 18 slaves. His land was willed equally to his five sons: Henry (Hal), Asa, Arthur, Jesse, Jr and William." (Bea O'Quin, 1997.)
1840 Monroe County, Virginia census: Asa is listed in his sixties, his wife Elizabeth in her fifties. An additional woman in her eighties was present, which was likely his mother Mary who died in 1842. His father Jesse had died in 1833. Others included a girl under 5, a boy 10-14, an boy 15-19, and a woman in her twenties. The older boy is probably Asa Jr., who married in 1842, the younger is probably Quincy, who married in 1847. Elizabeth or Temperance is probably the woman in their twenties (Martha was already married). I have no idea who the young child may be.
1860 Monroe County, Virginia census.
His wife, Elizabeth Greer, was consistently reported as younger than her husband. As she was married in 1798, and was bearing children as much a 30 years later, she probably married fairly young. The most likely range for her birth is 1775-1785.
"There seems to be a great deal of confusion about his birth date. I have seen 1762, 1772, and 1782. As he was married in 1798, and lived to 1860, the most likely range is 1772-1782. Some early information about the Dillon family is found in The Byrd Family of Franklin County Virginia, with Bradley, Dillon, and Perdue Lines, by Linda B. Nezbeth, published by Gateway Press, Inc., 1001 N. Calvert Street, Baltimore, MD 21202, 1986. Dillon lines are found on pages 16 thru 25, Purdue lines are found on pages 12-14. Although no sources are specified, this book seems to be fairly consistant with the few facts I have on Franklin County Dillons. In my estimate, its Dillon information should be considerd fairly reliable, but checked anyway." (Danny Dillon, 1998.)
Some information about Asa Dillon was found in Pioneers of Franklin County, Virginia, by Marshall Wingfield.
