Individual Details

John David Greer

(January 19, 1761 - February 2, 1843)

Information on the descendants of John David and Nancy Reddic Greer was taken primarily from A TRIBUTE TO THOMAS LACY GREER by Eliza M. Wakefield, 1953 found at the Texas State Library, Austin, Texas; and the writings of Ellen Greer Rees.

"John David Greer was born in Wake County, North Carolina. He served four years in the Revolutionary War." (Greer Chart by Leonard Greer of Lancaster, Pennsylvania as per GREER FAMILY, 1980 by William Greer Peck, page 112.)

(NOTE FROM RALPH TERRY: J. B. Bell in GREER KINSMEN (and this is repeated in Carolyn Beal's ROYAL HERITAGE OF THE GREERS), gives a birth year of John Greer, who married Sarah Hunt, as 1775. These sources show this John Greer to be a son of Aquilla Greer, Jr. (1744 - 1790), rather than a son of Thomas, as shown by Leonard Greer's charts. Therefore, John David Greer and his supposed father, Thomas Greer could have desecended from other lines than those shown in this genealogy.)

"The "D." in John D. Greer's name could be for David or Dunlap. He served in the American Revolution. His will was made in LaGrange, Troup, Georgia. Ralph Sloan says that John D. was born in Jasper County, Georgia, but is very unlikely. Peck says he was born 19 January 1761, Wake County, North Carolina - and died 1 February 1843, Troupe County, Georgia; married 14 February 1783 Edgefield District, South Carolina - served 4 years in the Revolutionary War. "Gone to Georgia" by Stewart, shows that John Greer once lived in Bedford County, Virginia. "Reason for the Tears" shows, "On March 4, 1833 John Greer listed was as one of the bondsmen for Nathaniel Hunt Greer as sheriff of Chambers County, Alabama." (William Greer, Illinois, 1995.)

Another descendant of this line is Sandy Rosine, S. W. 826 Crestview, Pullman, Washington 99163, in 1992.
