Elizabeth "Liza" "Lizzie" Griffith
(March 20, 1910 - September 26, 1992)
FAG 72234983
"Elizabeth (Lizzie) Griffith was born on March 20, 1910,18 in Santa Anna, Coleman County, Texas. On May 16, 1922 she married Luther Burton (L. B.) Wood in Nueces County, Texas, where she was just completing the fifth grade. (She apparently misled him concerning her true age. According to her daughter Margie, when he found out that she was only 12, he nearly backed out of the wedding. "She was looking for a Daddy," and she always called him "Daddy." Their wedding picture shows that she did indeed look older than 12, probably at least 16 or 17. Her fifth grade Report Card from the Robstown School District (Nueces Co., Texas) has been emended, in what appears to be the fine handwriting of the schoolteacher, with a line through her name, "Lizzie Griffith," and "Mrs. Luther Wood" written above it. The dates on the card are "Beginning Sept. 12, 1921 and Ending May 9, 1922.")
"They had a total of thirteen children, most of whom were born around Texas as he followed available farm work, but they headed West in 1939, stopping briefly in Arizona before settling in California. Their children were: Unknown (died at birth), twins Leddie Bell and Leddie May, Oscar Burton (died as infant), Vernon Carroll, Margie Vernell, Christine Lou, Rufus Walter, Elbert Newton, Arthur Daniel, Oma Grace (born in Arizona, but died six months later in California), Paul David, and Bernard Charles (the latter two were born in California). They eventually settled in Tulare, California, and both L. B. and Lizzie are buried there. He died on December 26, 1970, and she passed away on September 26, 1992."
