NOTE FROM RALPH TERRY: Mary E. "Polly" Reagan, mother of Martha Ann McDonald, married Samuel Meeks 12 June 1834 and remarried Charles C. McDonald sometime after 3 October 1835 under the name of Mary Macks. I have not determined what happened to Samuel Macks (or Meeks. From the 1840 census information of Martha Ann's grandmother, Olive Reagan, it appears that Martha Ann was born after the summer of 1835, as the child who appears to be her on this census was less than five years old. From the time I began working on my family genealogy in the early 1960s, I believed Martha Ann was the daughter of Charles C. McDonald. This information was shared over the years with many other family members and genealogists. I now know this is incorrect through DNA testing, as I am not related to other members of the McDonald families. Whether Samuel Meeks or Macks was her father is not known. I have not been able to determine any families that I am related to through DNA that are not known to me. I placed a tombstone at Martha Ann McDonald Newman's grave in 1992, before the 1920 census was released, with the birthdate of March 21, 1834, based on what Grandmother Aggie Hammonds had written.

"Mrs. Martha Ann Newman died January 28, 1921, age 87, born March 21, 1834." (From notes written by Aggie Phelps Hammonds about 1960 to 1965.)
