James Pickett Sr.

(Abt, 1703 - Abt, 1767)

"James Pickett, the fourth son of John and Mary Pickett, became the progenitor of the Anson County branch of the Pickett family. He was born about the year 1703, probably soon after the death of young James who was the half-brother of his father, John Pickett. He was probably born in Essex County, Virginia, where John and Mary lived at that time, but in that part which later became Caroline County. James married Hannah Renolds (or Reynolds) and lived near the town of Bowling Green, on two hundred acres of land provided for them by his father. In the year 1735 he and Hannah were living in King and Queen County, and in the year 1739 he was appointed constable of Orange County. Later the family appears in the Province of North Carolina, where their three sons and one daughter made a great contribution in the struggle for American freedom. Their three sons were: James, Junior, the eldest son and heir, who was a delegate to the Provincial Congresses; William, who became major of the First Regiment, North Carolina line; Thomas, the ensign and lieutenant; and one daughter, Elizabeth, who married Cornelius Robinson. James and his wife Hannah, followed their son, James, Jr., to Anson County in the year 1759 (where they purchased land) and lived there until about 1767 when he died, and his estate was settled. Hannah lived until sometime in the 1770's. These two people were strong characters and were law abiding, liberty loving individuals. They were beloved by their children and their names live over and over again in their children and in their children's children throughout the South." ("James Pickett, Anson Patriot" by Grady R.
