William was living in New Texas, Louisiana in 1923, when his father died.
"William Marvan - his first wife, Lora Dean Anderson, three sons, infant died at birth, William Marvan, Jr. died of Pneumonia at age of 7 months, and me, John A. His second wife was Ruby Bittle (widow of Dave Hammonds son, Leonard, killed by falling tree. They had one child, Charles Hammonds 10 months old when she married William). William and Ruby Bittle Hammonds had three daughter (all alive), Janet, Johnson City, Tennessee; Cheryl, Manassas, Virginia; and Mary, Phoenix, Arizona." (John A. Hammond, Edmond, Oklahoma, 1996.) (NOTE FROM RALPH TERRY: According to Clark County, Arkansas marriages records and Dave Hammonds' daughter, Nancy Jane Mobley, it was Lenford, not Leonard, who married Ruby Bittle and was killed by a falling tree.)
"FINAL RITES FOR WILLIAM HAMMOND OF CONGRESS WERE HELD IN PHOENIX SATURDAY. HE DIED ON HIS 57TH BIRTHDAY. Funeral services for William Hammond of Congress were held November 3 in Phoenix with burial in Memory Lawn Cemetery there. He died at his Congress home October 30, his 57th birthday, of a heart attack. Mr Hammond was born in New Orleans. After World War I, in which he served in the Navy, he moved to Congress in November of 1950. In addition to the widow, Ruby Ethel Hammond, five children survive. They are Lt. John A. Hammond of San Antonio, Texas; Pfc, Charles L. Hammond of St. Louis; and three daughters, Janet, Cheryl Ann and Mary Lou, all at home. The widow and three daughters this week moved from Congress to Phoenix. Also surviving are three sisters and two brothers." (Wickenburg Sun, Wickenburg, AZ, Friday, November 9, 1951.)
