Individual Details
Kate Hammond
(April 26, 1884 - 1968)
FAG 76786733
The marriage of Kate Hammonds, 18, of Arkadelphia, to Claude Ellis, 18, of Hebron, Clark County, on 12 April 1903 is recorded in Clark County, Arkansas Marriage Book M, page 345. Kate Ellis was living at Stephenville, Texas in 1923, when her father died.
"Kate - her first husband was named ______ Ellis and they had two sons, Clay and Joe. Clay became a lawyer and Joe was with the Mississippi Highway Patrol. Ellis died and she married Tom Bittle (Cinderella's widower - Tom married a woman between Cinderella and Kate and they had two daughters, Pearl and Ruby (my stepmother)). Kate and Tom had no children." (John A. Hammond, Edmond, Oklahoma, 1996.) (NOTE FROM RALPH TERRY: Later, John told me on the telephone that Kate and Tom had two sons, Roy and Dewey ... Roy with the legislature and Dewey with the Mississippi Highway Patrol. According to the 1930 census Roy and Dewey were Ellises, not Bittles.)
Apparently Claude Ellis did not die at the time John Hammond thought he did. I found WWI and WWII draft cards and a death certificate for him with the same birthdates, verifying this was the same man. Whether he and Kate divorced or just parted ways is not known to me. Kate was buried with the Ellis surname.
