Maude Poer

(March 18, 1889 - June 14, 1964)

"My mother, Maude Poer Tate, was born on Pretty Run Pike in Clark County, Kentucky on March 18, 1889. She met my dad while he was working in Clark County. They were married June 24, 1908 and she lived the rest of her life in Madison County, Kentucky. The only exception was one time they moved to Boone County, Kentucky where dad had a job for a short time. Mother was a great lady and it is impossible for me to attempt to explain or describe this 'great' person that I was so fortunate to know, love and admire. First of all, she was a Christian, 'a child of God' and never in my thirty-eight years did I see her show anything other than Christian love and compassion for her family and the people around her. I can never remember mother angry. Regardless of how a person had behaved, she would always find something good to say about that person. She never had a 'home church' until later in life when she became a member of the R ed House Methodist Church. If there was a revival within two or three miles, we would start walking to the revival meeting. Mother attended services of any and all denominations. Mother loved nature and all of the things created by God. She knew the different kinds of trees, flowers, weeds and birds. Mother loved her children, her sister and her brothers and her husband but there was never a question in anyone's mind that her God came first. She never went to bed before kneeling beside her bed and praying. In the morning, she was knelt by the cook stove praying while the fire got hot enough to cook breakfast. My mother's prayers and faith in God brought my brother and me home safe from the war. Mother had twenty-nine grandchildren and she showed the same love for them as she did her children. You can ask any grandchild today and they will tell you the same thing. Mother passed away June 14, 1964, in her home, after a battle with cancer. Her faith in God was utmost in her mind until her last breath. The last thing she said to 'all of us' was, "Take care of your dad and meet me in Heaven." Mother did not only teach us the love of God, but lived each day as a child of God throughout her lifetime here on earth." (Written by her son, James David Tate.)
