Martin Pickett

(December 25, 1736 - April, 1804)

"Col. Martin Pickett of "Paradise," Fauquier County, Virginia, the eldest son of William and Elizabeth (Cooke) Pickett, of Fauquier County, Virginia., born December 25, 1736 in King George County, Virginia; died April 1804 in Fauquier County, Virginia; served three terms as a Burgess, and represented Fauquier County in two of the most important Conventions ever held in Virginia, the COnvention fo 1776, which assembled at Williamsburg, and declared Virginia independent of the British Empire, and a Sovereign State. He was also a delegate to the Convention of 1788, which accepted the Constitution of 1787, under which the Union now is governed. He served with distinction in the French and Indian War, 1761, as Lieut. in Capt. William Edmunds Company of Virginia Troops; and in the Revolutionary War, as Lieut. Col. of the 3rd Virginia Reg. of Infantry, of which Col. Thomas Marshall, of "Oak Hill," was in command; was Sheriff, 1759; Justice, 1776; Tax Commissioner of Fauquier County, 1782; Coroner, 1783; and High Sheriff, 1785; he was a staunch supporter of the Episcopal Church, and a Vestryman; was a most generous and public spirited citizen, and gave the land on which the City Hall of Warrenton is built; also on which the various Churches are built (those that were established there before his death). He made will May 4, 1803, to which he added codicils April 12, 1804; the same probated April 24, 1804. He married mary 31, 1764, Ann Blackwell, born 1747; died about 1800; daughter of Joseph and Lucy (Steptoe) Blackwell, of Fauquier County, Virginia. (See Blackwell and Steptoe lineage.) Issue."
