The Martin family will receive visitors for Lela Elizabeth Martin, 72 of Portales, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Friday, October 22, 2010, at Wheeler Mortuary. Funeral services for Lela will be at 2:00 PM on Saturday, October 23, 2010, at Wheeler Mortuary Chapel with Rev. David McVey officiating. Burial will follow at Portales Cemetery with Jason Couch, Justin Cole, Jory Stockard, Steven Couch, Christopher Rousseau II, and Bobby Martin as Pallbearers. Honorary Pallbearers for Lela will be Jared Cole, Jay Cole, and Darrell R. Martin Jr..
Lela was born on November 26, 1937, in Snyder, Texas to Herbert Altemon and Lela (Gordon) Smith and went to be with the Lord on October 19, 2010, in Portales. She and her family lived in Dumas and Pampa area before moving to Portales. She attended school in Portales and graduated from Portales High School in 1956. At that point in life, she became part of the Painter family and moved to Alabama for a number of years. She and her family returned to Portales in 1980 and, on October 14, 1990, she became part of the Martin family by marrying Darrell Martin Sr., "Also known to her as Darrell Baby". She worked for Valley Federal Bank for a number of years, but her passion was as a homemaker. Lela was a very hard worker, especially for her family. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She loved the working outdoors, especially gardening.
Lela is preceded in death by her parents; great grandparents, DA and Lizzy Gordon; 3 sons, James Donald "Jody" Painter, Gordon K. Painter, and Bobby Norvell Martin, and one daughter, Dolores Wylene Cole.
Lela is survived by her husband, Darrell Martin of Portales; 4 sons, Jesse Painter of Portales, Chad Painter and wife, Amber of Clayton, Kenneth Kyle Painter of Dallas, TX, and Darrell R. Martin of Portales. Also surviving Lela are 3 daughters, Angela Lavato and husband, Michael of Portales, Mary Stockard and husband, Jody of Brownfield, TX, and Vonnie Rousseau and husband, Chris of Colorado Springs, CO; one brother, Duane Smith and wife, Thelma of Dumas, TX, and a sister, Jessie P. Smith of White Deer, TX. Also surviving Lela are 17 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren along with numerous brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law ,and various cousins.
