Individual Details
Nicholas George Morfogen
(1892 - 29 Dec 1963)
Personal History of Nicholas J. Pappas, January 1999 (in possession of Carol Kostakos Petranek) states "my uncles Nick, Paul and Sam all emigrated here and all died here.... My Uncle Nick went back [to Anavriti] with the idea he would stay. He decided to come back to New York just before World War II. He did return in 1939, however, his family did not make it and had to wait for the war to end. My Aunt Eleni had to have been a remarkably strong lady to keep her six children alive through this period. The family was finally reunited with my uncle after World War II, but they had to live through the invasion of Italy, which Greece repelled, but then were overrun by the German army and then the awful Civil War that pitted the pro-Communist against the anti-communist, and in some cases brother against brother. When they did get to New York, the three youngest children plus my aunt moved in with my parents. My mother told me she had trouble keeping fresh fruit available because the children were starved fro fresh fruit. Eventually they bought a home a few blocks from my parents and then the two oldest girls united with the family. All three boys were drafted and saw action in Korea. I've got a very strong attachment to my Uncle Nick's family."
