Nicholas J. Pappas Personal History, January 1999, (in possession of Carol Kostakos Petranek) - detailed information in Demetrios' notes. Regarding his mother, Nick states: " Prior to her marriage my mother worked in a rabbit fur factory. She told me the smell alone could make you sick. My mother was the leader of her clan, not just because she was the oldest, but because she was always available for counseling and/or physically pitching in. She obviously had to run the household because of the work hours that my father had. For many years she would save bacon grease and other cooking oils and use it to make her own laundry soap. After studying chemistry, I understood what she was doing with the addition of lye (sodium hudroxide) to the fats. I marveled at my mother's ability to get around New York City without being able to read. She would tell me what subway we had to take and would know what station we had to get off or when to change to a different subway. We had relatives scattered around Brooklyn, Upper Manhattan, and sections of the Bronx, and we always made it to our destination. She was very serious about her religion and did her best to get us to remember our evening prayers."

She died after falling out of a window. She was living with her son, Arthur. She was hanging clothes from a line, the line broke and she fell out of the window. (Per Nicholas J. Pappas)

The town of Anavriti was known at one time as a place where leather was tanned and shoes produced. Today it is mainly a summer vacation retreat (per Nicholas J. Pappas biography, January 1999).
