Obituary on 2 May, 1930 in The Madisonian says: "A. J. McDowell Dead. Madison valley suffered an irreparable loss Friday morning, April 25, 1930, when Andrew Jackson McDowell was called by death. He passed away at his ranch home at McAllister after a lingering illness of several months' duration. Jack McDowell, as he was popularly known, was born in Iowa October 31, 1856. There he spent his young manhood and in the spring of 1882 came to Montana, settling in the Madison valley. In August, 1891, he was married to Elizabeth Vincent Evans, a boyhood friend and schoolmate. Four children were born to them, Verna, Maurice H., Louis M., and Harold V.. Verna passed away in childhood. The three sons now reside at McAllister. They and a step-daughter, Edith Evans Fletcher, are left to mourn the loss of a kind and loving father." Copy in file.
