Newspaper article in Cedar County Republican, 10 Jun 1897, copy inpossession of the author, says: "James Harley Sanders was killedinstantaneously near his home in South Madison Twp. last Thurs. by atree he was cutting, catching him when it fell. He was only elevenyears of age, but had gone to cut a tree and was accompanied by twolittle sisters and a cousin. He told them to go to the house as thetree might fall on them. One of them answered, "It might fall on youtoo," but he said, "Oh no, I can dodge it." They went to the house andas soon as they heard it fall they went out and found him under thelap, dead, they ran to the house, toled his mother and she ran to him.She took the ax and cut the limb that pinned the body. He must havemistaken the direction the tree would fall and ran the wrong way. Hewas a good boy and loved by all his playmates; he talked a great dealof living right, how it looked for people to swear; he was kind andobedient. The family has the sympathy of the entire neighborhood. Thebody was laid to rest in the Fullington Cemetery (Dade Co.) in thepresence of a large concourse of friends and relatives."
Landers property in Cane Hill is on the southern edge of the countyand Fullington Cemetery is just across the county line into DadeCounty.
