Obituary in the Cedar County Republican Mary 12, 1986.
"Services for Willma Irene Fidler Jones, 70, of Fair Play, were held Saturday, March 8, at the Stockton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Alan Pruitt officiating. Burial was in Lindley Prairie Cemetery.
The daughter of Samuel T. and Mary L. Jones Fidler, Mrs. Jones was born March 15, 1915, in Cedar County. She died March 5, 1986, at her home in Fair Play.
She was a retired service representative with Pacific Telephone Co. in Tulare, Calif. She worked 28 years at Pacific Telephone serving as operator, chief operator and then service representative. She retired in 1970. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers, an organization which recognized her many years of service to the company.
She was a member of the Stockton United Methodist Church.
On April 16, 1933, Willma was united in marriage to Lawrence Jones of Stockton. The next year, she and Lawrence moved to Tulare, Calif.,where they made their home for 43 years. To this union, twin sons, Larry and Garry, were born.
She and Lawrence loved to travel and were members of three travel-trailer groups: the Ozark Wanderers; Wally Byrum Camper International, an Airstream group; and the Telephone Pioneers Family Campers. They had traveled extensively since 1976, had visited all 50 states and had traveled through Europe, Canada and Mexico.
While living in California, Willma kept close ties with her family in Missouri. Rarely a year went by that she didn't return to visit. Then in 1977, she and Lawrence moved back to the area, making their home in Fair Play, just a few yards from the house where Willma spent her childhood.
Willma's family was important to her as was her family name, Fidler. She did much research tracing her family's genealogy, and eventually had a book written on the subject.
She often was hostess to big family dinners and was always willing to share her house with loved ones.
During her last days, Willma chose to stay in her home, surrounded by those family members who meant so much to her.
In the end, Willma's body became frail as she battled with cancer, but her mind and spiritual outlook remained strong. So strong in fact that family members gained strength from her. She knew her death would be sorrowful for her relatives and friends, and tried to ease their pain.
She visited with many individually and shared with them her outlook on life, that God should be a person's first priority and all other things would fall into their proper places.
She was a kind and loving person who faced death the way she had lived life, caring about those around her.
She faced death with faith and courage because she knew dying was not the end. As she said her goodbyes to family members, she told them she was ready to pass into the arms of God.
She was preceded in death by her parents and by three brothers, John Shelby Fidler, who died in 1945; Paul J. Fidler, who died in August, 1985, and Joe C. Fidler, who died in November, 1985.
She is survived by her husband, Lawrence; two sons, Larry of San Diego, and Garry of Tulare; one Granddaughter, Lisa; one grandson, Robert; two daughters-in-law, Jeanne Jones and Linda Jones; a brother Bernard L. Fidler, of Fair Play; a sister, Velma Laverty of Richmond, Calif; two brothers-in-laws, Guy Laverty of Richmond, Calif., and Carl Jones of Stockton; five sisters-in-laws, Dorothy Fidler of Tulare, Calif., Emma Jean Fidler and Ruby Dean Fidler, both of Fair Play, Doris Jones of Stockton and Lois Jones of Monett; several nieces and nephews; other relatives; and a host of friends.
Pallbearers were nephews John Fidler, Tommy Fidler and Greg Fidler; great-nephew, Jay Chism; and John Hubbard and Chop Ryan."
