"A Modern History of Tulare County" by Annie R. Mitchell, 1974, page 122, says: "OLIVER PERRY SWANSON, JR. -
More than ordinary citizens, the Swansons were involved in many activities of early Tulare County. Oliver Perry, Sr. was the youngest of twelve children of John and Hannah Swanson who came from Illinois to Mud Springs (El Dorado), California in covered wagons in 1851. From there they came to Tulare County in 1853, and homesteaded land at Deep Creek and near present day Lemon Cove where Oliver was born in 1860.
"Ollie" Swanson farmed his own land at Deep Creek for years, was very active in furthering education there and in organizing and building the Methodist Church in that community. He spent much of his early life in the surrounding mountains doing trucking to and from the lumber camps. In later years, he and his family moved to Visalia where he continued his support of the church and was a member of several lodges.
In 1888 he married Nancy Eve Garver, and from their union came Mamie Swanson Clark and Oliver Perry, Jr. Mrs. Clark became a school administrator in the city of Los Angeles. Oliver Perry, Jr., was a dairyman and farmer near Visalia. He represented his district on the initial Visalia Hospital Committee and helped to make it a realization. He was well known for his exceptional baritone voice and was a soloist in the Methodist Church. In 1918 Perry married Bessie Ethel Darms, a teacher, and from this union came Leonard Perry, Bessie Ruth and Marian Lorraine. Oliver Swanson, Sr. died in February 1926 and O. Perry Jr. in September, 1970.
Leonard P. Swanson became a World War II and Korean War flier, and then flew for Strategic Air Command for many years. He has one daughter, Stephanie. The other members of the family were active in music circles in Tulare County. Dr. Bessie R. Swanson is now a professor of music in the University of Michigan. Marian Swanson married Sam Crandell and from this union came John Perry, Oliver Franklin and Donna Jean."
