"According to the parish registers of Hegra, the bachelor and servant Andreas Jonsen Lilleflor, born September 5, 1857 at Sonplads, and the maiden Sigrid Jonsdatter, born February 22, 1853 at Florbakken, got married May 31, 1878. The father of the groom was the tenant farmer Jon Pedersen Sonen; the father of the bride was Jon Olsen Florbakken...
Andreas, the son of the tenant farmer John Pedersen Sonbjorgen and wife Berit Andersdatter, was born September 5, 1857, and was baptized in the church of Hegra October 25, the same year."
Andrew emigrated to America in 1884 settling first in the Willmar, Minnesota area; then to Grove City, Minnesota; and in 1891 to Lakeland, Minnesota where two of his brothers lived. They resided in Lakeland for about five years before moving to Hudson where he remained for the rest of his life. While residing in Lakeland he became an employee of the Omaha Railway at the car repair shops in North Hudson, retiring at the age of 70. His daughter, Bertina, recalled that he kept busy with the help of his two brothers sawing ice on the St. Croix River. He built a large ice house and put in hundred pound blocks of ice. She said that he built three ice boxes that took the hundred pound ice block on the top; they were large and beautifully varnished. One winter he built a boat, light blue trimmed in black. She thought he had been a shoemaker back in Norway, and said that he was a butcher for a time while living in Lakeland.
In 2001, Doris Hite, a granddaughter of Bertina shared Bertaina's biography of her parents as well as a story of her own life. She noted "It was qute difficult to read as the pages were very worn and penmanship so light. She was 82 years of age when she wrote it. As you will note, she really loved her home in Hudson. I remember as a little girl when she lived in Hettinger, where I was raised, she would talk about Hudson so much. She certainly had fond memories of Wisconsin. She also loved her home in Hettinger and she really liked Sacremento."
The Biography of Andreas and Sigrid Staberg
by Bertina Staberg Sangsland
My father and mother came from Norway to the United States in 1884. I, Betina Sangsland, was born on the ocean coming over here. They came to Willmar, Minnesota. From there they moved to Grove City, Minnesota, then to Lakeland, Minnesota where my father's two brothers lived. There he worked in the sawmill with special machinery. In the winter he kep buys with the help of his two brothers and his horses. They sawed ice on the St. Croix River. He built large ice ouses and in 100 lb. ice cakes. He built three ice boxes that took 100 lb. ice in the top. They were large and beautifully varnished and rubbed down. One winter he built a boat--light blue trimmed in black. He was also a shoemaker by trade and a butcher in our town of Lakeland. He was a man with many talents. Being he was a carpenter by trade, he built sideboards and tables for our home. Later we moved to Hudson, Wisconsin where he was a finisher on passenger cars for the Milwaukee Railroad Company. He is buried in Hudson, Wisconsin.
My mother was a dear understanding mother, who had the duties as a housewife with two boys and four girls to wash, iron and sew for with rather poor health. She also kept boarders to help with the family income. They were hard workers, always busy and had very pretty homes.
