Art's story...
I was born at the St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin hospital. Our family lived about two miles west of Harris, Minnesota at the time.
I was about two or three when we moved to Jordan, Montana. We lived in Jordan until my father died in 1945. That following winter Dorothy and I went to stay with our aunt Belle and uncle Enoch in Minnesota.
Caroline went to Carl and Lucille's and Frances went to Mamie and George's in Milwaukee. Chet stayed
home as he was old enough to help.
We lived with Belle and Enoch for about a year. Our mother married Johnnie Adam and the family was re-united.
In 1950 Mom divorced Johnnie and married Jerome Saylor. We moved to the ranch near Brusett. During the school year I stayed at the dormitory and Caroline stayed with Liz and Harley Spracklin as she was working in the resturant part time.
The things I liked best about school was working in the woodshop, being in class plays, going to Boys State at Dillon, Montana and our Senior Sneak when we went to Great Falls. We visited the copper smelter and Lewis & Clark
Caverns and stayed overnight at the Park Hotel. I think everyone enjoyed that trip.
During the summer I worked for Hank Wease, mostly haying and fixing fences. The following summer I worked for Archie McDonald during haying season. Alvin Euell and I picked up and stacked a lot of hay-- a lot of work for $5 a day,
but nobody minded at all.
After graduation from Garfield County High School in 1955 I joined the Navy on May 30, 1955, attending basic training in San Diego, California and electronics school at Treasure Island, California. I spent 18 months on Guam in the Naval Supply Depot as a security guard. While on Guam I made Seaman (pay grade E3) and was striking for ships service (cobbler). I enjoyed photography, snorkling and golfing on Guam in my free time. After transferring to the U.S.S. Higbee in July of 1957, I got into the storekeeping group and was in charge of three storerooms of electronic parts. I was promoted to Storekeeper 3rd Class (pay grade E4) while aboard ship. We left Long Beach, California, getting out of
dry dock, for a far east cruise to Hawaii, Australia, Samoa, Pago Pago, the Phillipines, Tiawan, Hong Kong, Japan, Guam, Wake Island and back to the home port of Long Beach.
After seperation in June 1958, I spent a year in San Antonio with my sister, Caroline Schweers and family, moving to Minneapolis the following year where I stayed with my sister, Dorothy Krinke. I met Nancy in December, 1959, and we were married the following October.
While in Minnesota I worked briefly for Northland Electric, spent five years with Dictaphone Corporation in service and repair, worked for Continental Machines (manufacturer of DO-ALL products) as a draftsman, and spent two years
at 3M as an electrical technican.
I left 3M in June 1969 to open an auto parts store in Hudson. My brother-in-law, Bob Gartmann, helped set up the store and stayed with me until we sold out. Time went fast, seems like we were always busy. I think we met most of Hudson and the surrounding area over the years. We sold the store July 31, 1993.
Since then I have been keeping busy finishing the house, garage, working with the trees, yard and garden. When the garage is finished I hope to find time to restore antique cars. I have three to work on so far-- a '29 Ford coupe, a '29
Ford pickup and a '30 Pontiac sedan.
