Richard Barfield

(Aft 1722 - )

Richard went to Georgia, his branch of the family developed decided Toryism during the war for Independence. (Pauline Hughes)

No Richard Barfield/Barefield/Bearfield's found in the 1790 -1820 census records except this one in Maine:
BARFIELD RICHARD ME WASHINGTON COLUMBIA 1800

Notes from JoAnn Dickenson - (Could this be the other Richard?)
While in the nature of some controversy, since there were two Richard Barfields in Bladen/Robeson about this time period, this Richard Barfield sold part of his 1757 Bladen Co land grant on/near Hog Swamp and Ashpole in 1769. At that time he and his wife Mary were residents of South Carolina. 1790 census shows Joshua, Thomas, and Nathan Barfield also removed to SC by 1790, (as well as had at least two of the sons of the other Richard Barfield, namely Elisha and Shadrach Barfield, who had land grants further up Bear Swamp, between Gaddy's Mills and present day town of Dillon). It is suggested by many Barfield researchers that Jesse and Miles Barfield were probably part of the first Richard's family, and I tend to concur, with no solid proof but lots of little clues, in that belief. Josia was possibly a mis-reading of Jesse (no further record for any Josia Barfield found), and Miles not old enough to be taxed in 1763.

As a sidelight, part of the 1757 Richard Barfield land grant on Ashpole was a little later in the hands of some members of the Grantham family. And one of the Joshua Barfield land grants in Marion Co was on Little Pee Dee River, down between present day towns of Nichols and Mullins. There is strong evidence that at least two of the children of Richard Grantham Sr of Robeson also resided in that area. (Richard Grantham Jr. owning lands and residing within a mile of Joshua Barfields mills there on LIttle Pee Dee, and Hannah Smith, wife of Rev. Moses Smith, was possibly, indeed probably, the same Hannah Smith named as his daughter in the 1814 will of Richard Grantham of Robeson.) All this gives just a little insight into how interwoven those early Robeson/Marion/Horry families most likely were.
