Women's Improvement Club

Marjorie told me her parents moved to Santa Rosa during the 40's in order for her younger brother, Ken, to further his education past what was available in Covelo. While there, Anna worked in a dress shop during WW II. Robert and Anna returned to Covelo before 1950. Anna became an Assistant Postmistress in Covelo.
While visiting her grandmother, Laurie Prouty vividly remembers how "Nana used to keep a 22 rifle next to the kitchen sink. She would be standing there doing the dishes, then all of a sudden grab her gun, run outside and shoot a squirrel. She said that those squirrels brought in snakes. It wasn't the squirrels she hated so much... it was the snakes. I can remember her standing at the sink doing the dishes and all of a sudden hearing a commotion outside. She grabbed her gun and went out. I just thought that it was another squirrel episode, but no... that time she brought in a bobcat! It was after the chickens! Anyway, however you put it.. My Nana was a good shot with a 22."

Anna Lovejoy
Funeral services will be conducted Monday in Covelo for Anna F. Lovejoy, member of a pioneer Mendocino County family who died Wednesday in a Santa Rosa hospital following a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Lovejoy, 66, made her home at 19 Brighton court in Santa Rosa.
A native of Covelo, she was the daughter of early settlers Vinson English and Fanny Brown English. She had lived all of her life in Covelo before moving to Santa Rosa two years ago.
Prior to retirement she had been with the post office in Covelo for 16 years.
Mrs. Lovejoy was also a member of the Covelo Presbyterian Church.
She was the wife of Robert Lovejoy, and the mother of Kendall and Marjorie Ann Prouty, all of Santa Rosa, and the mother of Imogene Saunders, Sacramento. She also leaves her brothers, Shirley English, Covelo; and John English, Fort Bragg; and 10 grandchildren.
Monday's services will be at 2p.m. from the Covelo Presbyterian Church with interment following at Valley View Cemetery, Covelo.
Friends may call until Monday morning at the Anker-Lucier Mortuary in Willits.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
