"One interesting story about my parents wedding is that they eloped to Napa to get married. The reason for this is that my mother was a teacher in Covelo, and they had to get married in secret. If they did not, my mother would have been fired because at that time, it was unacceptable for a married woman to be working or hold a position as a teacher. Traveling from Covelo to Napa must have been quite a journey in 1934; nevertheless, they had to as if they were married in Sonoma or Mendocino County, their marriage would have been published in the local papers and their secret would have been lost."
