Vinson Edwin "Vincent" English
(24 Mar 1874 - 30 Oct 1954)
"My grandfather, Vinson English, was born in Redwood Valley (Ukiah), on a large ranch. His family had a Chinese cook who taught him Chinese songs and how to count in Chinese. He went to Sweets Business College in Santa Rosa and graduated in 1899. He married Fannie Brown and lived in Covelo (Round Valley).
His brothers, Dan and Wylie, also lived in Covelo. They had ranches there. Another brother had a ranch in Sacramento Valley. I was very afraid of the uncle who visited from Sacramento Valley when I was little. He talked very loud and insisted on my sitting on his lap. A sister, Elizabeth, "Auntie", was a school teacher who never married. She lived in southern California but spent her final days in Ukiah.
I remember when I was young, probably around 1932, the community put on a musical variety show. One of the acts was called "The Three Black Crows" featuring Dan, Wylie, and Vinson dressed up in black costumes singing. Vinson played the violin when a young man.
Vinson hauled freight and lumber. I remember riding on the freight and lumber wagon drawn by four large horses. The bench-type seat was high above the horses. Vinson had a small ranch and dairy and also was the county assessor for many years. He was well educated and well-read. He liked to talk, especially about "politics". I recall him insisting that this country should "watch Russia" and "beware of China." This was during the depression."
Marjorie's memories of her Grandma & Grandpa English's house -
"The perfumed blotters with violets.
Coty face powder. Little powder puffs.
Sponge cake with lemon fluffy frosting.
Orchard to climb, trail through the grass to the old leaky water trough - moss.
Wind mill tank running over.
Trail along the fence to old out-house, on to barn and chicken house.
Milk separator. Store room, old trunk, apply bins.
Raspberries on North side of house.
Cots under poplar trees - gentle wind, falling yellow leaves
Honeysuckle vines on front porch.
Crab apple tree, corn field.
Kitchen stove - water tank on back, warming ovens, old waffle iron."
Excerpt from interview with Mark Walker:
"Vince English, I didn't know him well, but I knew him. I knew him way back. I think I met him about 1911 and I remember the first time I ever saw, talked to him. I was driving a freight team from Branscomb to the coast and freight from the coast to Branscomb, from Sherwood Valley to Branscomb, and from Covelo back and forth hauling stuff out of Covelo or to Covelo. ...sometimes bring back grain... like that. Branscomb bought two horses from Vince English and put them in the team. So I was coming up the mountain there from Dehaven and Vince English comes down and says, "Stop, I want to see my two horses." They was on the team. I didn't know him, we got acquainted then, that way. He stops to see his two horses and we talked and after that I knew Vince English. When Rob got married, I knew who he married. I knew Darrell very well. Darrell was Lou English's son. And Darrell's mother was Lovell, and Darrell's mother's sister was Gina, Gina Lovell."

Last Thursday evening, the senior class of the high school and a number of their friends, gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Vincent English, for a party in honor of their son John, one of the class. They spent a most delightful time, with games, music and dancing. There were refreshments, of course, and all were sorry when the clock pointed to the inexorable time to depart.

Round Valley Pays Tribute to Vinson English
By Mrs. Harold Tuttle
COVELO - Funeral services for Vinson English were held at the Federated church Monday, November 1, with Rev. Gray Alter and Rev. Ernest B. Deford in charge of the services. Rev. Deford lead in prayer and read the Scriptures. Rev. Alter spoke of Mr. English as a personality. He was a great reader, never nervous, impatient or in a rush. Nearly all men complain of their aches and pains, but Vinson English was very patient in all his suffering, Rev. Alter said.
Mr. English was struck by a car Friday night, October 29. The car was driven by Keith Hurt of Covelo.
Mr. English was crossing the street from his home to the home of his son, Shirley, Friday evening and stepped from in front of a parked lumber truck into the path of the Hurt boy's car which was headed south. Mr. English was rushed to the Willits Hospital where at 9 o'clock the next morning he passed away.
Vinson English was born in Ukiah, March 24, 1874, and came to Round valley In 1888. February 1, 1905, he was united In marriage with Miss Fannie Brown. From this happy union were born three children, Mrs. Anna Lovejoy and Shirley English of Covelo and John English of Fort Bragg.
Mr. English taught in the elementary schools in and near Covelo for a few years.
After graduating from Sweets Business College at Santa Rosa, he did bookkeeping several years, then turned to farming, teaming, and carpenter work. He served as deputy county assessor for about 20 years.
He leaves to mourn his death his wife, Mrs. Fannie English, three children, six grandchildren, one brother, two sisters, numerous neices and nephews, and a host of friends who will all miss him very much.
During the funeral service Mesdames Beatrice Lovell, Myrtle Rohrbough, Lucy Bush and Charles Gray sang, The Lord Is My Shepherd, accompanied on the piano by Mrs. Alice Alter.
The pallbearers were six nephews, Charlie English, Darrell English, Byron English, Rink Brown, Martin Brown, and Clarence Brown.
The numerous and beautiful floral offerings which decorated the casket and background of the church showed the high esteem in which Mr. English and family were held. It took one vehicle alone to carry the most gorgeous flowers.
Those attending from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Byron English of Napa, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Saunders of San Francisco, the Earl Graves of Trowbridge, Darrell English of Williams, the Jack Lovells of Willits, Jame Rowe of Fort Bragg, the Frank Zeeks of Ukiah, The John English family of Fort Bragg, Earl Hooper of Berkeley and Mrs. Ruby Dyer of Oakland.
Mrs. Fannie English and family have the sincere sympathy of the entire Round valley community in their sudden and great loss of a loving husband and devoted father and grandfather.
