From the History of the Putnam Family in England and America, by Eben Putnam, (1891), (*Sara Putnam mentioned here): "Guarded by the range of the Chiltern Hills, which border the eastern part of the counties of Bedford and Hartford in old England, lies the Vale of Aylesbury in which is situated the parish of Puttenham and village of Aston Abbotts, the ancestral home of the Putnams. The manor house stands within its park on one side of the green and, at the further end, on the left, is the ancient church.... This is the district familiar to John Putnam in his youth, for in the neighborhood have lived his ancestors for sixteen generations before him and, at Wingrave, lived his parents and grandparents and here he was baptised and married. His later home was at Burstone, a town further north, and from there he migrated to New England to seek a new home in the then unbroken wilderness in Massachusetts."
"John Putnam of Aston Abbotts, county of Bucks, England, and of Salem, Massachusetts, was born about 1580 and died suddenly in Salem village, Massachusetts, (now Danvers), December 30, 1662, aged about eighty years. He married, in England, Priscilla (perhaps Priscilla Gould), who was admitted to the church in Salem in 1641. Children, baptized at Aston Abbotts: Elizabeth, bapt. 20 Dec. 1612; "Eliza Putnam" admitted to the church at Salem, 1643. Thomas, bapt. 7 March 1614-15; d. Salem Village, 5 May 1636 John, bapt. 24 July 1617; d. in infancy; buried at Aston Abbotts, 5 Nov. 1620 Nathaniel, bapt. 11 Oct. 1619; d. Salem Village, 23 July 1700, at the "age of 79 or 80" (Danvers Church records) Sara, bapt. 7 March 1622-23 Phoebe, bapt. 28 July 1624 John, bapt. 27 May 1627; d. Salem Village, 7 Apr. 1710.
His father, John Putnam Sr., was a resident in Aston Abbotts, England as late as 1627, as the date of the baptism of his youngest son shows, but just when he came to New England I am unable to state. Family tradition is responsible for the date 1634, and we know the tradition has been in the family for over one hundred and fifty years (1903)... If John Putnam came in 1634 he must have witnessed the excitement over Mrs. Ann Hutchinson (1634-8), the banishment of Roger Williams from Salem and the colony (1635) and very likely taken part in the attempt to put the colony in a state of defense against Charles I and Wentworth, who were ruling England without the aid of a parliament (1635). In 1636-7 occurred the terrible Pequot war and, although we find no mention of his name in connection with this war, yet it is probable that he took part in it with all the other men in the colony who were capable of bearing arms.
John Putnam was a farmer and exceedingly well-off for those days. He wrote a fair hand as deeds of record show. In these deeds he styles himself "Yeoman" once, in 1655 "husbandman." It is probable that he suffered a shock of paralysis, for his grandson Edward wrote (1733) that, 'He ate his supper, went to prayers with his family and died before he went to sleep.' He was admitted to the church in 1647, six years later than his wife and was also freeman the same year." (Eben Putnam's History, 1891, Vol 1, pp. 3-6)

comment. Terry KraftPutnam-359 and Putnam-118 do not represent the same person because: These are two different Sara[h] Putnams - different parents, et al.posted Jul 16, 2014 by Terry Kraft Anne BPutnam-832 and Putnam-118 appear to represent the same person because: same death. Since Wikitree doesn't support double dating, I've always understood that it's more correct to use the second year so 1622/23 should be listed as 1623.posted Apr 19, 2014 by Anne B
