Priscilla, Wife Of John Putnam
By Read H. Putnam, of Evanston, Wyo.,The New England Historical and Genealogical Register. Boston, MAVolume: 119, 1965, Page: 174.
John Putnam, who came from Aston, Abbots co. Bucks., England, to Salem, Mass., in the fourth decade of the seventeenth century, ??? have sought in vain for the maiden name of his wife Priscilla, the mother of his children.
It has been suggested that she was a daughter of Thomas Deacon of Hemel Hempstead, a reasonable assumption since Zaccheus Gould, who is known to have married Phebe Deacon, the eldest daughter of Thomas Deacon of Hemel Hempstead, refers to the emigrant's son, John Putnam the younger, as "my Cousin" - a term which at this period usually implied a nephew - when he made him his attorney on 30 Sept. 1658. The difficulty has been to determine in what way the term "Cousin" applied in this case.

The Putnam & Putman Families

John Putnam married PRISCILLA GOULD Abt. January 1610/11 in Wingrave, Buckinghamshire, England, daughter of RICHARD GOULD and ELIZABETH John was perhaps married in 1611 or 1612. The marriage records for this period are missing from the Wingrave register, and the register for Hemel Hempstead is lost.
On November 25, 1658, Zaccheus Gould of Topsfield deputed "John Putnam of Salem, the younger, his cousin" to be his attorney. (Essex Court Records, IV, 100). In an account book of John Gould, grandson of Zaccheus, born 1662, died 1724, is found an entry by him as follows, "Grandfather Gould lived in Buckinghamshire, and Grandfather Deacon in Hertfordshire, in Hempstead town in Corner Hall." In this same book are references to John Putnam, a contemporary, alluded to as "cousin." Jeremy Gould, a brother of Zaccheus, had a wife (Priscilla Grover) and was living in Aston Abbotts in 1631, but was in Rhode Island in 1638. Another brother of Zaccheus was John Gould, who lived in Bovington, and had a daughter Priscilla (who married a Grover and had in turn a daughter named after her) and also a neice Priscilla Ware. Neither of those were of suitable age to have married with John Putnam. (see Water's Gleanings, pg 1019) Both John Putnam and Zaccheus Gould named daughters "Phoebe." Cousin was a term in use in the early part of the 17th century to indicate nephew, and as there appears no opportunity for a Putnam-Gould marriage either way, the only alternative is to adopt the suggestion that John Putnam and Zacchues Gould had married sisters. Notes For Priscilla Gould
Posted 15 Jun 2015 by Jill Putnam

Notes for PRISCILLA GOULD:

The Arms of Deacon of Hemel Hempstead were, A chevron treillisse' betwen three roses.  Crest: a demi eagle.  This family has been of considerable note in Hertfordshire, deriving descent from Richard Deacon of Wyndruge, Hertfordshire, who died 1496, and whose three sons were in the service of the Crown, the elder as Secretary to Elizabeth of York, consort to Henry VII, and the other two in the military service.  Their uncle Michael was Bishop of St. Asaph. In 1658 (25 Nov), Zaccheus Gould of Topsfield deputed "John Putnam of Salem, the younger, his cousin" to be his attorney.  (Essex Court Records, IV, 100.)
In an account book of John Gould, grandson of Zaccheus, born 1662, died 1724, is found an entry by him as follows, "Grandfather Gould lived in Buckinghamshire, and Grandfather Deacon in Hertfordshire, in Hempstead town in Corner Hall."  In this same book are references to John Putnam, a contemporary, alluded to as "cousin." Jeremy Gould, a brother of Zacheus, had wife (Priscilla Grover and was living in Aston Abbotts in 1631, but was in Rhode Island in 1638. Another brother of Zacheus Gould was John, who lived in Bovington, and had a daughter Priscilla (who married a Grover and had in turn a daughter named after her,) and also a neice Pricilla Ware.  Neither of these were of suitable age to have married with John Putnam.  (See Walter's Gleanings, page 1019.)  Both John Putnam and Zacheus Gould named daughters "Phoebe."  "Cousin" was the term in use in the early part of the 17th century to indicate nephew, and as there appears no opportunity for a Putnam-Gould marriage either way, the only alternative is to adopt the suggestion that John Putnam and Zaccheus Gould had married sisters.  (See page 46, Geneological Bulletin for 1903.)
According to Professor Gould, Phebe, wife of Zaccheus Gould, was a daughter of Thomas and Martha Deacon of Corner Hall.  Thomas Deacon is said to have been born about 1585.*  Thomas Deacon of Corner Hall was the father of Thomas, born in 1609, who was B.A. Oxford, 1627, and grandfather of Lt. Col. Thomas Deacon, the Parliamentary soldier.  It is probable that the Thomas Deacon of Corner Hall, called grandfather by John Gould, was born some years prior to 1585.  Bovington the home of the Goulds and of the Deacons is part of Hempstead, and is but eight miles from Tring.  It is an interesting coincidence that Richard Deacon, the Queen's secretary, purchased the two chief manors in Stewkley, Barns and Littlecote, in 1503, which in 1521 he gave by will to his son Richard who was of Marston Morteyn, Beds., and died 1543.
* Through the courtesy of Mr. Edward Deacon who has published in a work entitled "The Descent of the Family of Deacon of Elstowe and London,"
an extensive collection made by him regarding the Deacons, the will of Thomas Deacon of Bovington, Hertfordshire, yeoman, has been examined.  The testator directs that his body be buried in the churchyard at Bovington, and makes a small bequest to the poor.  He names his three daughters, Awdry, Margaret, and Marie, and his sons Roger and Thomas both of whom were minors.  To son-in-law John Ewer's children, William and Ann, and after legacies to William Parret, Francis Axtell, John Feilder and Henry Style, resides to wife Joan, who with her brother Richard Allen are made executors.  Henry Mayne and John Gould to be overseers. Witnesses, Thomas Hallam, Raphe Bullock, John Deacon, Thomas Fielde and others.  Dated 1 June, 1582, proved, Arch. Hauts. 20 June, 1582.

Gould Family feud sparked the Salem Witch Trials
Posted 15 Jun 2015 by Jill Putnam
FAMILY RECORDS AND INFORMATION
Sarah (Averill) Wildes, was accused of being a witch during the Salem Witch Trials hysteria. The marriage of John Wildes and Sarah Averill within a year of the death of John Wildes' first wife, Priscilla (Gould) Wildes, seems to have caused trouble between Wildes and two relatives of his first wife, Lieut. John Gould, her brother, and Mary Gould Reddington, wife of John Reddington, her sister, who lived on an adjoining farm. The first intimation of this state of affairs, appears in the statement John Wildes, Jr., made in his will, regarding his Gould inheritance, in order that his father might not be troubled by any claims of his uncle Gould. [The father of Priscilla (Gould) Wildes, Lt. John Gould, and Mary (Gould) Reddington was Zaccheus Gould, who died leaving one of the largest estates in the area and land holdings of 3,000 acres.] In 1686 the breach was widened by the testimony of John Wildes against John Gould on the charge of treason. Shortly after this episode, Mary (Gould) Reddington began to spread witchcraft stories about Sarah (Averill) Wildes through the town and it is to her authority that most of the evidence against Sarah (Averill) Wildes may be traced. When John Wildes threatened to sue her husband for slander, she denied her previous statements, but evil had already been wrought. Now the Goulds were related to the Putnam family of Salem Village since Zaccheus Gould's sister, Priscilla Gould, was married to John Putnam. It was in the home of one of John Putnam's descendants that that the delusion originated and who were the chief accusers in the trials to come and it is probable that the accusations brought against Sarah (Averill) Wildes by their Topsfield connections, were brought to the willing ears of the afflicted girls of the Putnam family and proved the immediate cause of her arrest. On April 21, 1692, the warrant was issued, casting terrible affliction upon several Topsfield homes, none more so than that of John Wildes, for the warrant named not only his wife but his daughter and son-in-law, Edward and Sarah (Wildes) Bishop of Salem Village. All the efforts of the family were in vain, however, and Sarah (Averill) Wildes was executed on 19 Jul 1692 with Sarah Good, Rebecca (Towne) Nurse, Elizabeth How and Susannah (North) Martin (see below). Edward and Sarah (Wildes) Bishop managed to make their escape from prison, and Phoebe (Wildes) Day, the other daughter of John Sarah Wildes, who was imprisoned on the same charge at Ipswich, was apparently never tried.

Ephraim Wildes was also constable at the time and that may have caused some ill will towards his mother.

Terri Terrell My link to the witch trials is from Edward Colborn who is the husband of a great aunt 10x generation. So from there it would be linked Bridget bishop, Sarah and Edward Colborne II Sarah Averil Wildes, Rebecca Nurse and Mary Easty(Esty) I think that is how it goes. All cousins and in laws. I am not sure if all that is correct but it seems to be. I think the direct line of all this for my family is the griffin family. My ggggg-grandmother is Abigail Griffin who is married into Nichols and Wilbur families quakers from Easton NY . Somewhere in there that family is linked to Pickman sanders family and Norcross family. I think through Stephen Griffin

susandpurington01 My fifth great grandmother, Damaris, daughter of Mary Gould, was a devout Quaker. If her parents were, too ( there were many conversions to Quaker), there are good meeting minutes with a lot of info including family records, etc. that might not have been published other places. Just for what it's worth, my tree went crazy when I found out they were Quakers.

waffles14 Yes, I too noticed some Quakers in my tree...and Pennsylvania Baptists. Oh my my ... and all these years we thought all of our English ancestors had come over with the John Wesley Methodist Church movement......my daughter's middle name is Wesley as my ggg grandfather in Iowa helped found a small rural Methodist Church named the Wesley Chappel. Have several generations buried there .... but that line did come over with one of the Methodist Church movements ... I was very surprised to find so many Quakers and Baptists in my other lines .....so fascinating.

Biography

Priscilla Gould was born about 1585. No birth or christening records are available for her, as the Bovingdon registers from before 1674 are lost. She is "identified in the notice of settlement of estate of her father, Richard Gould."[1][2]
No marriage record was found, but she is said to 'almost certainly' be the Priscilla that married John Putnam of Aston Abbots.[3] Her son, John Putnam Jr, was called 'cousin' (nephew) by Zaccheus Gould, her brother.[2] John and Priscilla Putnam were said to have gone from Aston Abbots to Salem, Massachusetts with their children Thomas, Nathaniel, John and Elizabeth.[3][4]
No death record was found for Priscilla. She was mentioned as late as the 21st of February 1648/9 in the Essex County court records.[5] The family lived in Salem, where Priscilla most likely died. Her husband died in Salem in 1662.[2][4] Priscilla was laid to rest with her husband, John, in the Wadsworth Cemetery, in Danvers.[6]
Family
John Putnam and Priscilla married about 1611, in England, had issue:Children:
Elizabeth Putnam, bapt. at Aston Abbots, Bucks, 20 Feb. 1612; "Eliza Putnam" admitted to the church at Salem, 1643.[7][4]
Lt. Thomas Putnam, bapt. at Aston Abbots, Bucks, 7 Mar. 1614/5; of Lynn and Salem, Mass.[8][4]
John Putnam, bapt. at Aston Abbots, Bucks, 24 July, 1617; died in infancy; buried at Aston Abbotts, 5 November 1620.[8]
Nathaniel Putnam, bapt. at Aston Abbots, 11 Oct. 1619; of Salem, Mass; died Salem Village, 23 July 1700 age "about 79 or 80"(Danvers church records).[8][4]
Sarah Putnam, bapt. at Aston Abbots, 7 March 1622/3.[8]
Phoebe Putnam, bapt. at Aston Abbots, 28 July 1624;[8] and buried there 30 April 1630.
Capt. John Putnam, bapt. at Aston Abbots, Bucks, 27 May 1627; of Salem, Mass.[8][4]Note: No mar rec found, but she is almost certainly the Priscilla who married John Putnam of Aston Abbots, Bucks, 14 miles from Bovingdon. Her son, John Putnam, Jr, is called "cousin" [nephew] by Zaccheus Gould, Priscilla's brother, on 20 Nov 1658 (RECORDS AND FILES OF THE QUARTERLY COURTS OF ESSEX COUNTY, 9 vols. [Salem, MA, 1911-75], 2:126 [FHL #974.45/P2e]).[2]Note: Torrey indicated marriage before 1605; this appears in error. He has the marriage with Zaccheus Gould for before 1620, Torrey's Supplement also has the marraige bef 1605 and cites REG 119:174.[9]John Putnam married PRISCILLA GOULD Abt. January 1610/11 in Wingrave, Buckinghamshire, England, daughter of RICHARD GOULD and ELIZABETHJohn was perhaps married in 1611 or 1612. The marriage records for this period are missing from the Wingrave register, and the register for Hemel Hempstead is lost.[10]Research Notes

Our Generations Ancestors
Gould, PriscillaBorn Abt 1585 of Bovingdon,Herts,EngDied Aft 1640 Salem,Essex,MAFamily Putnam, JohnMarried Abt 1611PUTNAM, JOHN, Salem 1640, is said to have come with wife Priscilla, children Thomas, born it is said, about 1618; Nathaniel, about 1621; John, about 1630; and Elizabeth from Aston Abbots, near Aylesbury, in Co. Bucks, though family tradition has the name of a place in Co. Warwick, where it is unknown, freeman 1647, says Farmer by mistake, though true it is he was that year received into the church as had been his wife in 1641, died 30 December 1662.[4]It has been suggested that she was a daughter of Thomas Deacon of Hemel Hempstead, a reasonable assumption since Zaccheus Gould, who is known to have married Phebe Deacon, the eldest daughter of Thomas Deacon of Hemel Hempstead, refers to the emigrant's son, John Putnam the younger, as "my Cousin" - a term which at this period usually implied a nephew - when he made him his attorney on 30 Sept. 1658. The difficulty has been to determine in what way the term "Cousin" applied in this case.[3]Note: Torrey indicated marriage before 1605; this appears in error. He has the marriage with Zaccheus Gould for before 1620, Torrey's Supplement also has the marriage bef 1605 and cites REG 119:174. 2 3 1 (Banfill)The Putnam name comes from the parish Puttenham in Buckinghamshire.[11]On November 25, 1658, Zaccheus Gould of Topsfield deputed "John Putnam of Salem, the younger, his cousin" to be his attorney.
